5 Options To Fix The Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Situation

A team, that according to their owner, started the season "all-in", have no choice to push all their chips to the middle of the table right now. The Dallas Cowboys lost starting quarterback Dak Prescott to a leg injury on Sunday, and there's no definitive time table on his return. A week nine loss to the Atlanta Falcons dropped the Cowboys to 3-5, in danger of missing the playoffs, if things don't turn around in a hurry.

Dallas needs a quarterback that can hold down the fort, ideally win every game he starts, while they wait for Prescott's return. The trade deadline is imminent, so if they choose to replace Dak out of house, they need to make that decision today. Here is a look at five options to holdover the Dallas Cowboys quarterback situation.

  1. Current Dallas Cowboys Quarterback Cooper Rush Or Trey Lance

The Dallas Cowboys have two players on their roster, that are familiar with the teams playbook, and could step in immediately. The problem is, neither one instills much confidence. Cooper Rush, in his seventh season out of Central Michigan, filled in Sunday when Prescott was hurt. He barely completed 50% of his passes (13 for 25) for 115 yards and a touchdown.

Trey Lance is also available. The number three overall pick in the 2021 draft has only started four games in his NFL career. He's 2-2 in those games (the last game, he himself, left with an injury), completing 55.4% of his passes, and connecting on two touchdowns to three interceptions. The fact that he didn't replace Dak on Sunday, is evidence that the Cowboys don't trust the player they sent a fourth-round pick to 49ers for, prior to the 2023 season.

  2. Mac Jones, Jacksonville Jaguars

His final year for the New England Patriots, Mac Jones became a bit of a football pariah. He had lost confidence in himself, and looked as if he might never start an NFL game again. He was the 2021 Offensive Rookie of the Year, after posting a 10-7 record for New England, and leading them to the playoffs. He was acquired via trade, by the Jacksonville Jaguars during the offseason, to backup Trevor Lawrence. Given the Cowboys desperation, the Jags could get more than the 7th-round pick they traded away for Jones.

  3. Zach Wilson, Denver Broncos

The second overall pick in the 2021 Draft (this draft was not great for quarterbacks), Zach Wilson was brought into Denver to start the season, while rookie Bo Nix learned the ropes. Nix won the starting job in camp, and Broncos fans never got to see what the MILF hunter could do. In three seasons with the New York Jets, Wilson started 33 games, posting a record of 12-21. He completed57% of bis passes, and had 23 touchdowns, with 25 interceptions.

  4. Justin Fields, Pittsburgh Steelers

Basically, every quarterback taken in the first round of the 2021 draft, except for Lawrence, is available via trade. Justin Fields started the season for the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were waiting for Russell Wilson to return from injury. Fields went 4-2 to start the season, completing 66.3% of his passes with a 5:1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. He is clearly the best quarterback available, and will cost the most to get.

  5. Derek Carr, New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints just fired their head coach, and the rebuild has officially begun. They have no more use for Derek Carr, who seems hell bent on hospitalizing all of his receivers. The despite the horrible pass that wrecked Chris Olave's season, Carr has been wildly accurate through his career. He has a 65% career completion percentage, and more starting experience than any other available quarterback. He could be had cheap, if the Saints are willing to eat his dead cap hit.
