5 Trade Deadlines Adds That Could Take The Twins To The Next Level

The Minnesota Twins have been the most inconsistent team in Major League Baseball this season. The rally sausage seemed to give them life after a tough start but they are not quite playing up to their highly regarded potential, This year's trade deadline will be crucial to this team's success as the right move could make this team into a title contender but the wrong ones could be detrimental to the team. These are the 5 players I believe could be great additions to this team and could improve their title odds down the line.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. celebrating a big hit.

#1: Blue Jays 1B Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

The Blue Jays as a team have hit their overall ceiling with their current roster and could look to retool with their window closing. The Twins have a hole at 1B with Carlos Santana and Alex Kirilloff not meeting their expectations. Vladdy is posting his best season since 2021 with a weighted-runs created plus (WRC+) of 141 and an OPS of .814. If the Blue Jays look to deal Guerrero ahead of the deadline, the Twins would be a perfect place as they are looking for a more consistent on-base player and Guerrero ranks among the best in the league at doing that.

Brent Rooker slides into second after hitting a double.

#2: Athletics OF/DH Brent Rooker

The Oakland A's are among the worst teams in baseball and Rooker is like a Corvette next to trailer house with them. Rooker is also among the best DHs in baseball with a WRC+ of 158 ranking 9th among all hitters in baseball. The Twins are ranked 21st in production from their DH spot in the lineup and Rooker could stabilize this for them. The A's will likely be shopping Rooker at this year's deadline after failing to find a deal for him last year, and I think the Twins could potentially be in on bidding.

Pete Alonso points to the dugout after hitting a home run.

#3: Mets 1B Pete Alonso

The Mets hired David Stearns to become their president of baseball operations and I think he will quickly try to retool this roster to contend in the near future. One major issue for them is upcoming free agent Pete Alonso. Alonso doesn't seem interested in signing long-term and will likely be dealt before the deadline. The Twins would be an excellent fit for Alonso as it would add even more home run upside to a team that already ranks 9th in the league in total home runs.

Yimi Garcia celebrates after getting a strikeout.

#4: Blue Jays RP Yimi Garcia

The Twins have struggled to get consistent good innings from their relievers this year and I think Garcia would be a great addition to their bullpen. Garcia is currently having the best season of his career, posting an ERA of 2.16 in 25 innings of work so far. The Twins could use a player of his caliber in their bullpen and it wouldn't cost that much with him becoming a free agent after this season.

Ryan Pressly celebrates after locking down the inning.

#5: Astros RP Ryan Pressly

How about a reunion? Pressly has been an Astros star bullpen arm since he was traded there back in 2018 by the Twins. He has been off to a slow start in 2024 though, posting the worst numbers of his career up to this point with an ERA of 5.01. With the Astros having their worst season in a bit, they may end up dealing Pressly at the deadline with his contract expiring at the end of the season. The Twins would be a good fit for the Pressly bullpen as he would be able to comfortably settle into a middle bullpen role rather than having to be the setup man.

And that is the 5 players I'd like to see the Twins pursue this trade deadline. While I think the Twins will hard-push for 2 of these guys, I believe adding any of them would heavily increase this roster's chance of making a deep push this postseason.
