5 Underdog Teams Who Could Win The College Football Playoff This Season
The College Football Playoff is finally expanding to 12 teams this season, and with the field expanding, there is a chance for a handful of teams to compete for titles that couldn't in past years; here are some of the underdog teams that could shock the world and win it all this season.
5. Penn State
Penn State has been in the shadows of Ohio State and Michigan in the Big Ten, not being able to reach the playoffs since it expanded to four teams in 2014, but now, with the 12 teams, they have a chance to win it all; they have maybe the best overall player in the country in pass rusher Abdul Carter, one of the best quarterbacks Drew Allar and a running back duo of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. The Nittany Lions could get hot in December and shock the world.
4. Utah
Utah is going to look different in 2024, and that's because they will be heading to the Big 12 and should be the favorite to come out of that conference. A familiar face returns to the team in quarterback Cameron Rising, who missed all of last season with an injury, but he is one of the best quarterbacks in the sport and should give the Utes a chance come the postseason.
3. Missouri
Missouri came out of nowhere last season as one of the best teams in the country and even made a New Year Six Bowl, beating Ohio State. The Tigers return one of the best quarterbacks, Brady Cook, and the best wide receiver in the country, Luther Burden III. If the Tigers can get through the tough SEC and make the playoffs, they have a shot at making noise this season in the postseason.
2. Notre Dame
Notre Dame has to be in this conversation after adding Duke's transfer quarterback, Riley Leonard, who could win the Heisman Trophy. Head coach Marcus Freeman is heading into his third season as the head man and has shown signs of progress to be one of the best coaches in the sport. The Fighting Irish could be major players this season
1. Miami
Why not the Miami Hurricanes? They added Washington State's quarterback Cam Ward this offseason, and head coach Mario Cristobal needs to figure something out, or he could lose his job. The Hurricanes could be one of the best teams in the ACC this season, and they will get to host Florida State at home and avoid Clemson. They could make some noise in the ACC and find a pathway to the playoff where they can figure something out and go on a run.
