A Healthy Deshaun Watson Could Regain Fantasy Greatness
In Watson's first two seasons with the Browns, he struggled to stay on the field. In 2022, it was due to his suspension; in 2023, it was injuries. Although he has not looked great from an NFL standpoint, in 5 out of his 11 full games with the Browns, he has finished as a top-10 quarterback and had two games where he finished as QB14.
His passing numbers have been inconsistent, but he has added some decent production on the ground game in almost all of his starts. Watson is working with Wide Receivers Amari Cooper and Jerry Juedy, which must be considered cautiously as Cooper is getting older and Juedy still has much to prove. Several young WRs, including Elijah Moore, Cedric Tillman, David Bell, and Jamari Thrash, can take a step forward.
Of course, we can't forget about Tight End David Njoku, who took a massive step forward in the 2023 season. All fantasy managers who played while Watson was the Texans' starting quarterback remember him as one of the most lethal fantasy quarterbacks at the time. There is a chance he could return to those numbers if he stays on the field, but it should not be something you bank on happening.
Due to Watson's contract, he is almost guaranteed three more seasons as a starter to prove himself again. He is an interesting yet risky player to draft or trade for in dynasty leagues. In redraft leagues, Watson should be drafted to be your QB 2 with the potential to work his way into your starting lineup on a weekly basis.
Our consensus projections for Watson in the 2024 season would be: 372 completions, 4331 yards, 25 touchdowns, 11 interceptions through the air, and 76 carries for 386 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns.
