A'Unanimous Decision For WNBA MVP

A'ja Wilson is the WNBA's Most Valuable Player for the third time in her career. Wilson received 67 first-place votes, making it a unanimous decision amongst voters.

“We’re watching one of the greatest players of all time in front of our eyes,” said Aces’ teammate Kelsey Plum earlier this season. “Going forward, we’re like, it’s a unanimous vote this year.”

The only other WNBA player to receive a unanimous MVP vote was the Houston Comets' Cynthia Cooper (1997) in the WNBA’s inaugural season. Wilson also joins Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie, and Lauren Jackson in the three-peat MVP club.

“I am so proud of you, A’ja Wilson, for joining our elite group of MVPs. Three MVPS. You have been outstanding all year long,” Leslie told Wilson in a video uploaded to X (formerly Twitter).

Wilson “Locks In” During the 2024 WNBA Regular Season

Wilson was the first player in WNBA history to record eight consecutive games of 20+points and 10+ rebounds. From July 5 to Aug. 18, Wilson and her white t-shirt and gray sweatpants were nearly indefensible on the court. During that stretch, Wilson helped the Aces go 6-2.

On June 5, Wilson became the first WNBA player to record at least 35 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals in a game. She finished the game against the Dallas Wings with 36 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 steals.

On Sept. 15 in a win against the Connecticut Sun, Wilson became the first WNBA player to score 1,000 points in a single season. At the end of the regular season, she had 1,021 total points. Wilson set the single-season total rebounding record with 451 total rebounds. This made her the first player in WNBA history to lead the WNBA in total points, rebounds, and blocks (98) in a season.

Wilson has the record for the most 25+ point and 10+ rebound games in a single season (22). She also joined Diana Taurasi and Breanna Stewart for the most games with at least 40 points (4). Wilson also had the most games with at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in a single season (8).

Against the Hawks, Wilson joined Candace Parker as the only WNBA player to have at least 25 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 blocks in a game (Aug. 30). Wilson had 26 points, 16 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 blocks.

“It’s not like she’s just on one end getting it done,” Aces’ head coach Becky Hammon said in a post-game presser earlier this season. “No, she’s on both sides getting it done.”

The Post Season

Starting Sept. 22, the fourth-seeded Aces will take on the fifth-seeded Seattle Storm in Las Vegas in a best-of-three. The Storm won the first match against the Aces, but the Aces won the next three. The Aces won two of those games by double digits, and the other by five points.

Wilson and the defending Aces are looking to three-peat this year. If they do so, they will become the second team in WNBA history to do so after the now-disbanded Houston Comets won the first four WNBA championships (1997-2000).
