Alabama Officially Hires Their New Defensive Coordinator
The Alabama Crimson Tide and brand-new head coach Kalen DeBoer have named their new defensive coordinator, which is Kane Wommack. The former South Alabama head coach was officially announced as the Tide’s DC and inside linebackers coach on Monday.
Wommack, at only 36 years old, is one of the rising stars in college football coaching. He led South Alabama to a 22-16 record in three seasons, winning the program’s first bowl game in 2023 and capturing the Sun Belt Conference Western Division title in 2022. He also posted the Jaguars’ first two winning seasons in FBS history.
Before taking over at South Alabama, Wommack was the defensive coordinator at Indiana for two years, where he transformed the Hoosiers’ defense into one of the best in the Big Ten and the nation. In 2020, Indiana led the country in red zone defense, ranked second in interceptions, and 13th in takeaways. Wommack was a finalist for the Broyles Award that year, given to the top assistant coach in college football.
Wommack has a strong defensive pedigree, as he is the son of former Ole Miss and Arkansas DC Dave Wommack. He learned from his father and other mentors, such as Tom Allen and Bobby Petrino, and developed his own philosophy of defense, which he calls the “Swarm Defense”. His scheme is based on speed, aggression, and versatility, and aims to create chaos and confusion for opposing offenses.
Wommack is excited to join Alabama, a program that he grew up watching and admiring. He said he is looking forward to working with DeBoer, a friend and colleague who he trusts and believes in. He also said he is eager to uphold the standard that Alabama has set in college football, and to contribute to the Crimson Tide’s legacy of excellence.
Wommack is expected to bring a fresh and innovative approach to Alabama’s defense, while also maintaining the tradition and identity that has made the Tide one of the most dominant forces in the sport. With his experience, energy, and expertise, Wommack is poised to be the next defensive mastermind at Alabama.
