Alexander Mattison Might Be Cooked For Fantasy
Alexander Mattison went from an elite fantasy handcuff to a terrible pick as a full-time starter last season and is now back to a backup role. The only difference this time for Mattison is he doesn’t have Dalvin Cook in front of him, who was a top 5 running back for most of his time in Minnesota.
Zamir White is slotted in as the Raiders starting RB this season, and the coaches are high on White, but White has only started 4 games in 2 seasons and hardly saw the field in the games he didn’t start. It is unknown how White will perform as the team's full-time starter, which means there is a chance Mattison gets more work than expected.
If White comes out and disappoints, the team could turn to the more experienced back in Mattison to lead the backfield or at least split carries. Due to that reason alone, Mattison is probably worth a late-round draft flier but isn’t worth much more than that because he is expected to be the full-time backup unless he loses the job to rookie Dylan Laube. In best-ball drafts, it isn’t a bad idea to take Mattison with your last pick if White were to miss time, but Mattison most likely won't be more than a backup who sees 25-30% of the touches.
Our consensus projections for Mattison in the 2024 season are 71 carries for 234 yards and 1 rushing touchdown. As well as 5 receptions, 29 yards, and 0 touchdowns.
