Are The Eagles (12-1) The Best Team In NFL After Shellacking The Giants At MetLife?

The Eagles on Sunday served notice to everyone that they are continuing to play their best football at exactly the right time in this 2022 regular season. After three exchanges of possessions in an NFC East game against the New York Giants, the Eagles led by three touchdowns on the way to a 48-22 win to improve their record to 12-1 and clinch a playoff spot.

Eagles Are In

Philadelphia Eagles are in the playoffs!

After defeating the New York Giants and boosting their win total to 12 through Week 14 of the season, Philly has claimed their rightful spot in the playoffs for a second straight season.

The goals, of course, are much higher than simply making the postseason. Philadelphia has a two-game lead in the NFC over both Dallas and Minnesota, who are both 10-3.

“Hey man, we want the playoffs to come through Lincoln Financial Field,” said defensive end Brandon Graham, who led a 7-quarterback sack defensive performance with a career-high-tying 3 of his own on Sunday. “We want that bye week and we want that home-field advantage, because we know our fans are going to bring it.” Brandon Graham – Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles certainly brought it on Sunday to defeat the Giants, opening with a barrage in the first quarter-plus to go up by three touchdowns. It was awesome all the way through, particularly in those first 22 minutes when the Eagles did everything right.

“You know it’s a significant milestone for the team to be here because it’s hard to make the playoffs. Everybody knows that it’s hard to be a playoff team and in the fashion in which we did it is even crazier and even harder. Personally, man, I’m excited. This is the first year of my NFL career where I’m going to the playoffs. I can’t wait to see what the atmosphere is like and hopefully do my part and the team do the job so we can go and play for the victory. Just because we clinched a playoff spot, that doesn’t mean let off the gas. We’ve got to keep coming in each and every day, each and every week. You know, day by day, taking it one day at a time, one game at a time, and continue to play the football that we have been.” Haason Reddick – Philadelphia Eagles
“Of course, you want to get in the playoffs, but I think just with this win, we’re not really thinking about the playoffs right now. We’re trying to make sure our cars are all gassed up before we get to the playoffs. So, we’re gonna try to keep using this momentum moving forward to the next game, and when the playoffs get here, we want to be firing on all cylinders.” A.J. Brown – Philadelphia Eagles

If Season Ended Today: Current NFC Standings

  1. Eagles (12-1) – NFC East leader

  2. Vikings (10-3) – NFC North leader

  3. 49ers (9-4) – NFC West leader

  4. Bucs (6-7) – NFC South leader

  5. Cowboys (10-3) – Wild Card

  6. Commanders (7-5-1) – Wild Card

  7. Giants (7-5-1) – Wild Card

Would-Be Wild Card Round Playoff Matchups

• Giants vs. Vikings in Minnesota

• Commanders vs. 49ers in San Francisco

• Cowboys vs. Buccaneers in Tampa Bay

But, thankfully it does not…

Here’s what has to happen for the Eagles to win the NFC East:

Like Head Coach Nick Sirianni always says, the next game is the most important one, it’s a mentality that’s been instilled throughout the locker room.

But, in order to have a better slate in the playoffs, the Eagles need to win their division.

Lucky for them, if they remain steady on the trajectory they’ve followed all season, they’ll handily close the door on the regular season ahead of the Cowboys (9-3), Commanders (7-5-1), and Giants (7-5-1).

The Cowboys are their closest competitor in the NFC East, but after beating the Houston Texans, they trail by two game and the Eagles currently have the tiebreaker from their early-season matchup with four to go. Plus, the Cowboys still have the Jaguars on deck before hosting Philadelphia on Christmas Eve.

Here’s what has to happen for Philadelphia Eagles to earn the #1 seed:

Finishing with the best record in the conference means earning home-field advantage AND the only first-round bye. The Eagles are the most likely candidate for the spot as it stands, especially after the Minnesota Vikings lost to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Vikings trail by two games.

An early-season win could come into play if the Eagles and Vikings end the regular season with the same record. Since Philadelphia beat Minnesota in Week 2, the Eagles have the tiebreaker.

If the Eagles win their next two games, at Chicago and at Dallas – they will clinch the NFC East AND the No. 1 seed.

Here are the three teams’ remaining schedules:

Philadelphia’s Schedule

Week 15: PHI vs. Bears in Chicago – Dec. 18

Week 16: PHI vs. Cowboys in Dallas – Dec. 24

Week 17: Saints vs. Eagles in Philadelphia – Jan. 1

Week 18: Giants vs. Eagles in Philadelphia – Jan. 8 or Jan. 9 (TBD)

Minnesota’s Schedule

Week 15: Colts vs. Vikings in Minneapolis

Week 16: Giants vs. Vikings in Minneapolis

Week 17: Vikings vs. Packers in Green Bay

Week 18: Vikings vs. Bears in Chicago

Dallas’ Schedule

Week 15: Cowboys vs. Jaguars in Jacksonville

Week 16: Eagles vs. Cowboys in Dallas

Week 17: Cowboys vs. Titans in Tennessee

Week 18: Cowboys vs. Commanders in Washington

In Conclusion

The Philadelphia Eagles came into MetLife and treated it as their home game against the division rival New York Giants. From start to finish they soared directly up, around and through Big Blue like it was practice and the Giants did not have an answer at any phase on offense, defense nor special teams. And that’s…”The Lex Of It
