Are The New York Giants Good?
It might be strange to consider the 1-2 New York Giants a good team. They started the season getting blown out by the Minnesota Vikings, then followed it up with a loss to the division rival Commanders. So now coming off of a week three win over the Browns, is there hope for the Giants after all?
Are The Lows Really That Low?
The Giants started the year with a 28-6 loss to the Vikings. It was surprising to see Minnesota operate so well with Sam Darnold starting at QB. The Vikings lost star defensive end Danielle Hunter and QB Kirk Cousins in the offseason as well. Expectations were incredibly low for the 2024 Vikings.
Looking back on that loss, Minnesota is 3-0 and Sam Darnold is leading the NFL with 8 passing touchdowns. They beat the 49ers 23-17 in week two and destroyed the Houston Texans 34-7. The Vikings look legit, and a blowout loss to them doesn’t seem so shocking now.
The Future Is Bright In New York
First-round wide receiver Malik Nabers has looked terrific so far. The LSU product is fifth in the league with 271 receiving yards. He had a couple of unreal catches on Sunday as well. On one grab he mossed Browns defender Martin Emerson to get the Giants into the redzone. He’s quickly emerging as New York’s WR1 moving forward.
The Giants’ defense is finally finding its rhythm in 2024. The group held Cleveland to 217 total offensive yards and sacked Deshaun Watson eight times. Brian Burns had seven pressures in the game and a sack that led to a fumble for the Giants to recover. The eight sacks came from nine different defenders in this game, showing that the whole unit is dominant. New defensive coordinator Shane Bowen is figuring out this team’s strengths and leaning into them.
Resilience And Commitment
Head Coach Brian Daboll has been pushing resilience and commitment to his team. He understands that things don’t always go perfectly, but they can still get the job done. They fought hard for their win in Cleveland despite having a disastrous start.
The Giants shouldn’t rely on being the best or most talented team in 2024. They should take a page out of Detroit’s playbook to scratch and claw for every win. It’s a prove-it year for Daniel Jones, Malik Nabers looks great, and the defense is kicking into another gear. 2024 won’t be an outstanding year for New York but it can be a great start to something better.
