Auburn Guard To Enter The Transfer Portal
AUBURN, AL - Sophomore guard Tre Donaldson has announced via his Instagram that he is entering the transfer portal. During the previous season, Donaldson improved his numbers and averaged 6.7 points and 3.2 assists, sharing starts with Freshman guard Aden Holloway.
This move wasn't unexpected as many had anticipated a point guard to enter the portal.
Donaldson was one of the top dual athletes in the nation when he graduated high school. He received offers from big Power 5 programs like Alabama, Florida, Florida State, and Kentucky among others.
When he finally committed to Auburn, he planned to play both football and basketball for the Tigers. However, he later decided to focus solely on basketball. Currently, Donaldson is the second Tiger to enter the portal following K.D. Johnson.
What Could This Mean Moving Forward?
It looks like with Donaldson leaving, Pearl and his staff will need to recruit a new point guard from the transfer portal. The question now is who will they choose?
In my opinion, Furman's transfer guard JP Pegues might be a good candidate, as he recently visited Auburn on April 2nd-3rd according to On3's Justin Hokanson.
The timing of Pegues' visit and Donaldson's departure are interesting, although this is just speculation. It's clear that the coaching staff is looking for high-level scorers in the backcourt, and Pegues fits that description perfectly.
