Baker Mayfield Pities Texas

Baker Mayfield, Texas, Flag

There are some people who never get over events in their lives. Maybe it was a bad breakup or a huge financial loss. The Texas Longhorns, their players, coaches, and especially their fans, have never gotten over being dominated by Baker Mayfield. The current Buccaneers quarterback pities the University of Texas for continuing to suffer back-to-back losses that happened a decade ago.

Baker Mayfield VS Texas (2016)

On October 8, 2016, Texas and Oklahoma faced off, both with disappointing 2-2 records. Texas was able to score against the Sooners, thanks to 159 yards and two touchdowns from D'Onta Foreman. It wasn't enough though, and Baker Mayfield unleashed a fury on the Longhorns that they had no answer for, and no clue how to slow down.

Baker finished the game 22 of 31 (71%) for 390 yards and three touchdowns. The Texas kid took down the state's pride and joy almost single-handedly. The Longhorns felt the sting of utter disappointment and an overwhelming feeling of inadequacy. They longed for revenge, but the following year's contest would not go any better for them.

Baker Mayfield VS Texas (2017)

The rematch would take place on October 14, 2017. Texas came into the game 3-2 and the Sooners were 4-1. Baker Mayfield was en route to hoisting a Heisman trophy and tis came would help that journey along. He went 17 of 27 for 302 yards and two touchdowns, making the Cotton Bowl his home stadium for a day.

Texas had no choice but to bow down to their king, or at least their daddy, as the Sooners bus rolled out of town. There was no way they could ever recover from this level of ownership, and nearly 10 years later, they proved that. Mayfield had to remind them of his squatter's rights in their heads.

Baker Mayfield Responds To Texas

After the Longhorns defeated Oklahoma 34-3 in the 2024 Red River Rivalry, a couple of their linebackers (Anthony Hill Jr and Barryn Sorrell) planted a Texas flag through a Baker Mayfield jersey. Surely they had proven that the losses to Mayfield are hardly ever thought about in Austin. Baker doesn't think so.

After making the New Orleans Saints look like the University of Texas this past Sunday, Baker was asked about the flag incident. His response:

"Just a kid from Austin, Texas that went to Oklahoma, won his last two Red River games, and being rent-free in their heads for almost a decade."

Years after he left the Sooners to become the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, Baker Mayfield is still sticking it to the Longhorns. Just like in 2016 and 2017, they have no answer for him in 2024. Truth is truth, and Texas just got a double serving of it.
