Bears Add Athletic Playmaker To The Offense
Per Jeremy Fowler, the Chicago Bears have signed 29-year-old Gerald Everett, formerly of the Los Angeles Chargers, to a two-year contract worth $12 million. The contract includes a guaranteed amount of $6.1 million and could be worth up to $14 million.
What Gerald Everett Brings To Chicago
Gerald Everett's arrival brings athleticism to the Bears' tight end room and provides a high-quality backup option behind Cole Kmet. During his time with the Chargers, Everett amassed 966 receiving yards and seven touchdowns over two seasons.
Bears Offensive Coordinator Shane Waldron is already familiar with Everett's abilities working with him when he was a position coach and passing coordinator for the Rams when Everett was drafted. Waldron and Everett were reunited with the Seahawks, where Waldron served as an offensive coordinator.
Everett's blocking is the biggest weakness in his game to become a complete tight end. However, this does not bother me as much as other fans.
Cole Kmet, who is one of the league's best blockers at the tight end position, will be starting most run-downs anyway. Therefore, Everett will not be required to see the field as a run blocker.
What Could This Mean Moving Forward
It seems that the addition of Everett to the tight end room has made it highly unlikely that Brock Bowers will be selected by the Chicago Bears in the upcoming NFL Draft.
This is a relief since the Bears already have a capable player in Cole Kmet, who has been a frequent target on the offense.
With indications pointing to Chicago selecting Caleb Williams as their first pick, they will need to add another wide receiver to complement D.J. Moore. Marvin Harrison Jr is expected to be picked in the top five, which leaves Rome Odunze or Malik Nabers as potential options for the Bears at the ninth pick.
