Bears Make Their First Big Move Of Free Agency

The Chicago Bears have made a significant move in the free agency market by signing former Philadelphia Eagles running back D'Andre Swift. The deal is worth $24.5 million over three years, with $15 million guaranteed, per Ian Rapport.

Swift will earn $8.5 million in year one, $8.25 million in year two, and $8 million in the third season. The Bears have a potential out in 2026 when he would only cost $1.3 million toward the dead cap.

Swift is joining a backfield that includes Khalil Herbert and Roschon Johnson. He brings a skillset that the Bears' backfield was lacking as a true receiving threat out of the backfield.

Last season the Philadelphia Eagles traded for Swift from the Detroit Lions for a 2025 fourth round pick and an exchange of seventh round picks. Swift spent the first three years of his career with the Detroit Lions. So he has plenty of experience in the NFC North.

What Swift Brings To The Chicago Bears

Swift, 25, is coming off his best season as a professional, where he earned a Pro Bowl nod by rushing for 1,049 yards at an average of 4.6 yards per carry and five scores. As I stated earlier he is also a receiving threat out of the backfield, having caught 39 passes for 214 yards and a score.

From his time in Seattle we have seen Shane Waldron use two running backs in his offense. In Seattle it was Kenneth Walker as the lead back and Zach Charbonnet coming as the change of pace back.

D'Andre Swift will be used as the every down back and brings the versatility to play all three downs. He can be used as an inside/outside runner while being a receiving threat out of the backfield.

My Thoughts

Adding another running back to this room was needed. With Khalil Herbert on the last year of his rookie contract and Travis Homer on the last year of his deal that would leave Roschon Johnson as the lone back in 2025.

While Swift isn't the running back caliber of Josh Jacobs or Saquon Barkley he still is a RB1 in the league and brings an explosive element to this offense that is desperately needs.
