Best & Worst 2022 College Football Teams Against The Spread
Through Week Four of the college football season, there are eight teams with a 4-0 record against the spread. Let’s take a look at these teams, how they got here, and see if we think they will move to 5-0 ATS. Will they stay perfect after Week Five?
#1 South Alabama
The South Alabama Jaguars are the best team in Alabama… against the spread. They are a scrappy team that has scored an average of 38.8 points per game and 449.5 yards per game.
Their competition has also not been horrible. The Jaguars boast wins against Central Michigan, Louisiana Tech, and some school named Nicholls. This week South Alabama takes on Louisiana as a -9-point favorite. The Ragin Cajuns look to stop South Alabama’s improbable run of covering all four weeks of the college football season.
#2 Kansas Jayhawks
The Jayhawks find themselves in the unfamiliar territory of having a positive record. Starting the season 4-0, Kansas obviously has covered every game because they’re never favored in any games.
The Jalon Daniels-led offense has been putting up crazy numbers even for good college football teams. Scoring 48.5 points per game, Kansas has been demolishing their opponents. They have solid wins against West Virginia, Houston, and Duke. Kansas seems to be legit, but they find themselves +3.5 against Iowa St. this week. Something to keep an eye on.
#3 Minnesota Golden Gophers
The Golden Gophers are one of the most polarizing teams in college football. Head coach PJ Fleck is one of those guys you either love or hate. Right now, people hate him because his team is 4-0 and, in college football, all that matters are wins.
Minnesota had a terrible year last year, but now are coming into Week Five with a 4-0 record. They have wins against New Mexico St, Colorado, and their best win against Michigan St. The Gophers’ offense has been dominant with 45.8 average points and 543 yards per game. They find themselves at home this week against a mediocre Purdue team. Are you comfortable taking Minnesota -12 this week?
#4 UNLV Rebels
The Rebels look to be on this list because of how bad Vegas thinks they are. Looking at who they have played this year, you can understand how they find themselves at 4-0 ATS.
They haven’t had any close games this year besides a week two loss to Cal 20-14, and some of the spreads in their games have been interesting. Being a 12.5-point underdog against CAL, who can’t score a lot of points, had to be an early season miss. UNLV is -14 against New Mexico this week. I think their 4-0 run might be coming to an end this week.
#5 Oregon St. Beavers
The Beavers found themselves in Week Four as one of the most bet-on teams in the sports betting world. They took on #7 USC and gave them hell for the entire game.
The Beavers are a decent team. Scoring 37.8 points per game and allowing only 23.5 points per game, they have an all-around solid team. They have also played some decent teams, such as Boise St and Fresno St. Oregon St. finds themselves against #12 Utah at +10.5. Taking out Utah’s 73-7 win against Southern Utah, they have only been scoring 31.66 points per game. I would look for Oregon St. to continue to beat the spread and move to 5-0 ATS.
#6 Arkansas St. Red Wolves
This team has a very logical answer as to why they are 4-0 ATS this year. They have had some big spreads this season. The three spreads they have had as underdogs are 14.5, 4.5, and 44.5. If you can run the ball and run the clock out, you can cover a 44.5-point spread against almost anyone.
I think it’s been a miracle they have covered the spread in all of their games this season so far. This has to end at some point. Being a seven-point favorite against UL Monroe this weekend, I don’t see Arkansas St. getting to 5-0 ATS.
#7 Southern Miss Golden Eagles
Like Arkansas St., Southern Miss has been the benefactor of some decently high spreads. To show you how lost Vegas is at putting a spread on their game, there still isn’t a spread on their game against Troy this week. The Golden Eagles do boast a quality win against Tulane, but other than that, they don’t stand out. They seem to be an outlier that won’t be able to continue this run for the long haul. I look for them to drop their unbeaten streak this week or next week against Arkansas St.
#8 Washington Huskies
Washington is 4-0 heading into Week Five of the college football season and they have a great chance at going 5-0. Washington is -3 against UCLA, who is coming off a boat racing of Colorado.
UCLA is feeling good. However, Huskies QB Michael Penix Jr. has been outstanding this season. Leading Washington to 44 points per game and 530.8 yards per game, they are an offensive juggernaut. They also have a very solid defense, allowing only 19 points per game and an even more impressive 89 rushing yards per game. I think the Huskies can make some noise in the Pac 12 this year and they find themselves in a great spot to go 5-0.
Who do you think will remain perfect ATS after Week Five of the college football season? I think there are five or six teams that can do it and make some noise in Vegas. For more sports betting and college football information check out Stadiumrant.com.
