Breaking: Houston Astros Release Former League MVP In A Shocking Move
The Houston Astros have been the best team in baseball since 2017, and even a franchise that has won Two World Series since then can screw up from time to time; on Friday, they finally released one of their bad free agent signings from last offseason.
After winning the World Series in 2022, the Astros made a major move, signing Chicago White Sox first basemen José Abreu to a three-year 58.5 million dollar deal.
Abreu is a three-time All-Star and even won the A.L. MVP in 2020, but that version never made it to Houston. Last year, he had a batting average of .237 and an OPS of .680 with 18 home runs, and this season, he has been worse, only batting .124, an OPS of .361, and two home runs.
The Astros finally ended the Abreu experience on Friday, releasing him, and now they will take a hit of around 30 million dollars.
Houston has not gotten off to a great start this year, currently with a 31-38 record and eight games back in the A.L. West, but they still have fantastic players and experience to turn this thing around and don't be shocked if they end up making the playoffs this season.
