Cleveland Browns Upgrade Offensive Depth With This Pro-Bowl Player

The Cleveland Browns are making some moves in free agency. With former star quarterback DeShaun Watson under contract for a few more years and NFL Comeback Player of the Year Joe Flacco, who was signed after Watson's season-ending injury and led the Browns to the playoffs, likely signing elsewhere in free agency, the Browns have added Saints quarterback Jameis Winston.

Jameis Winston Brings Experience To Browns Offense

Jameis Winston brings a lot of excitement and experience to the Browns' offense. The 30-year-old was drafted first overall in the 2015 NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In his first season, he broke a handful of Buccaneers rookie records, leading to his first and only Pro Bowl appearance. He followed up that season in 2016 by leading Tampa Bay to a 9-7 record and throwing for 28 touchdowns and 18 interceptions.

In 2019, he led the NFL in passing yards with 5,109 yards and 33 touchdowns. He also led the league in interceptions with 30. He was signed by the New Orleans Saints after the Buccaneers acquired quarterback Tom Brady. He has been the backup behind Drew Brees and started in 2021, throwing for 14 touchdowns and three interceptions before suffering a season-ending torn ACL eight weeks in.

Winston has shown potential as a starting quarterback throughout his career. He is not afraid to throw deep and create big plays. As a big risktaker, he has struggled with throwing interceptions and securing the football. Nonetheless, he brings mobility and experience to the Browns and is really fun to watch.

Winston Could See Field Sooner Than Later

While he is not signed to be the starter, he is expected to start at some point if recent history says anything about how the Browns season will go. Watson had several injuries last season and was suspended the year before. He has only played twelve games in two seasons with Cleveland, and the last quarterback besides Baker Mayfield in 2019 and 2020 to start a full season for the Browns was Tim Couch in 2001.

But Winston has all the tools to keep Cleveland afloat if Watson goes down. As long as he plays it safe, makes smart decisions, and throws the ball effectively, he can help the team win games and boost the offense, just like Joe Flacco did in late 2023.

Andrew Berry and the Browns hope Winston never sees the field and Watson can stay healthy all year. But if the former Texan has to step off the field, the Browns have a reliable backup ready to play.
