Bucks Confirm Veteran Contributor's Future In Milwaukee

lopez, bucks, trade

The Milwaukee Bucks have decided to retain one of their veteran contributors for now.

ESPN insider Brian Windhorst confirmed that the Bucks plan to keep center Brook Lopez on their roster for the 2024-25 NBA season.

“As of right now, I’ve been told firmly that they are not trading him. And so is Brook. Brook heard some of the rumors and said, ‘Hey, what’s going on?’ They’re like, ‘No, we’re not trading you,’” the 46-year-old journalist stated on The Hoop Collective podcast.

Lopez has one year remaining on his contract, during which he is slated to make $23 million for the 2024-25 season.

The 36-year-old was the subject of trade rumors last June, when league insider Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer reported that the Bucks were looking to implement a more versatile style of defense next season under head coach Doc Rivers. This plan could potentially lead to Lopez falling out of the rotation.

The former Stanford Cardinal had a solid campaign last season, with numbers consistent with his overall tenure in Milwaukee, averaging 12.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game in 79 regular season games.

The Bucks were eliminated in the first round of the 2024 NBA Playoffs by the Indiana Pacers in six games after facing injuries to stars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard.

Brook Lopez's Defensive Resurgence In Milwaukee

Lopez has transformed his style of play since arriving in Milwaukee in 2018, becoming a vital contributor to the franchise's 2021 NBA championship run.

The 7-foot-1 center has developed a reliable three-point shot, increasing his attempts from beyond the arc in recent years. He made his first All-NBA Defensive Team in 2019-20, earning Second-Team honors 12 years after his NBA debut.

Three years later, he was named to the All-NBA First Defensive Team after leading the league in total blocks with 193 during the 2022-23 season.
