Chelsea Has Named Their Captain For The 2023 Season
Updated: Jan 13
As London based English Premier League team Chelsea gets ready for it’s 118th season in existence, they have named their captain for the 2023 season. 23-year-old Reece James takes over at captain replacing César Azpilicueta who returned to the La Liga, which is a soccer league in Spain. It’s a huge honor for the English born footballer who looks to lead the club that brought him on at such an early age.
Reece James’ Career At Chelsea Goes Back Many Years
James came from of family of soccer players including his father who manages a coaching business. His early exposure to the sport enabled him to play in leagues that were older than his age group. James signed with Chelsea at just six years old back in 2006. He played among their various youth leagues for over a decade learning all the positions.
He made his Chelsea debut in September of 2019 during the EFL Cup scoring one goal and recording two assists in Chelsea’s 7-1 win over Grimsby Town. He then appeared in 24 matches during the 2019 Premier League season including Chelsea’s Champions League victory. James earned PFA Young Player of Year Award following the 2021 season.
Despite a couple of injuries causing him to miss time last year, he looks to return to peak form. James did get plenty of playing time this preseason including during the club’s summer 2023 United States tour. In addition to his time with Chelsea, James has been part of the England National Team since 2020.
Chelsea fans, players, and coaches couldn’t be more excited for the news of James being named the captain.
The club’s head coach Mauricio Pochettino said: “This is a decision taken by me and the club. We are very pleased Reece will captain the side this season. He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas.”
Club directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart are just as pleased. “Reece’s connection with Chelsea has been forged over 17 years. He understands the traditions of the club and the responsibilities that come with being captain. He knows the standards required to win at this club, both from his time in the Academy and the first team. It is a very proud moment for Reece, and everyone connected to the club.”
Looking Ahead
In 2023, Chelsea looks to improve upon their 12th place finish from a year ago. The club finished with a disappointing 11 wins, 11 draws, and 16 losses in 38 matches. Chelsea went through four head coaches during the up and down season. However, fans are hopeful that former footballer and coach Mauricio Pochettino can turn things around this year.
