Chicago’s Trash Has Been The Steelers Treasure So Far
Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin still hasn’t named Justin Fields the starting quarterback yet because he doesn’t have to. Even without that, it seems pretty clear that Fields has done enough in the first three weeks to keep Russell Wilson on the sideline. Wilson has gotten well acquainted with Mr. Wally Pip these past few weeks.
They usually say that you can’t lose your job to an injury in the NFL but in Pittsburgh’s situation, how do you bench Fields after his start to the season? You simply can’t. Luckily for Mike Tomlin, he doesn’t have to come to terms with that decision yet with Wilson still nursing the calf injury. He might have to break the news to Mr. Unlimited in a few short weeks.
Improvement Each Week
If Steelers fans weren’t convinced after the first two weeks, week three did the job. In week one Fields went 17/23 with 156 yards, then in week two he completed 13 of his 20 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown. He didn’t play badly in either game, but the fans needed to see a big game from the newly acquired Steeler.
Fields answered the questions in the week three win over the Chargers. He was able to complete the second most passes in a game of his career along with the highest completion percentage of his career. In his first game for the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium he went 25/32 with 245 yards, one passing touchdown, and one rushing touchdown in the win. Through three weeks, Fields joins Aaron Rodgers as the only player with no turnover-worthy plays.
The first-year Steeler also became just the fourth quarterback in franchise history to start a season 3-0. He joined elite companies in Terry Bradshaw, Neil O’Donnell, and Ben Roethlisberger. All three of those guys played in a Super Bowl in black and yellow. To put it in a crazy perspective, Fields only had ten wins in his three seasons in Chicago. He already has three in Pittsburgh.
No Going Back For The Steelers
Although it would be nice to see what Wilson can do in this offense, there’s no reason to fix something that is properly working. Unless Fields messes up in a big way, it’s his team for now. He was able to gift wrap Calvin Austin his best career game on Sunday. Austin caught four passes for 95 yards and had a momentum-turning touchdown. Outside of the game in Las Vegas last season, he’s been invisible for the Steelers. Fields unlocked him on Sunday.
With Fields under center, the offense has been much more efficient than last season. Through three weeks, the Steelers have won the time of possession battle in every game. With a defense as dominant as Pittsburgh, keeping them off the field for extended periods just means they’ll be extra juiced up when they get out there. So far, that formula has worked for the Steelers.
They say one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Pittsburgh has turned what Chicago considered trash into what could be the Steelers’ next franchise quarterback. If Fields keeps this pace, the sky is his limit in Pittsburgh. Steelers fans everywhere would love to thank Ryan Poles and the Bears for helping them turn Chase Claypool and a sixth-round pick into Joey Porter Jr and Justin Fields.
