Classic Kelly-Green Uniforms Are Set To Return To Philly In 2023

The Eagles‘ Kelly-green uniforms are set to return to Philly in 2023. Jalen Hurts and the crew are bringing it back to times long gone with these jerseys. They are revamping the colors and uniforms that made players like Reggie White and Randall Cunningham look like an Eagle.

The Likable Kelly-Green Unis

The Kelly-green uniforms were in use by the Eagles from 1985 through 1995. Before 1985, the Eagles had green uniforms but with a much darker shade of green. After the 1995 season, the Eagles switched to their modern midnight green uniforms, which have been the team’s staple ever since.

The Eagles would be eager to wear the Kelly-green uniforms in 2022, but it is a lengthy process. Nike has to match the exact color codes and produce the material that mirrors the original Kelly-green uniforms.

The Eagles are also debuting another uniform change. The Eagles will have the option in 2022 to wear black helmets in addition to their black alternate uniforms. For a while, the NFL had restrictions on using different helmets within a season. The NFL has cleared the rule so teams can wear second helmets in 2022. Last season, the Eagles wore the all-black uniform with green helmets in their December 26 home win over the Giants 34-10.

The NFL Rules On Alternate Uniforms

When it comes to alternate uniforms, clubs must obtain an entirely new set of alternate color helmets for all players. Alternate color helmets must be the same make, model, and size as the applicable player’s primary helmet.

Alternate color helmets must be made available to all players at the start of training camp and should be fit at the same time as the primary helmet.

Alternate color helmets must be worn in practice at a minimum during the week leading up to the game in which they will be used.

Flashbacks Of The Ugly Baby-Blue Unis

With the Eagles’ new Kelly-green uniforms, they will look to erase memories of the yellow and baby blue throwback uniforms. In Week Three of 2007, the Eagles wore uniforms that were a throwback of a throwback. They debuted yellow jerseys with baby blue letters. The pants were solid white and had baby blue socks underneath. The Eagle’s yellow helmets were designed similarly to the Michigan Wolverines with baby blue stripes.

The Eagles showed pure dominance over the Lions and coasted to a 56-21 victory. Wide receiver Kevin Curtis had nine catches for 205 yards and three touchdowns in the first half alone. Curtis’s receiving yards tied Lee Evans for the most during the first half of a game since 1987. No matter how great of a performance Curtis had, the ugliness of the uniforms stole the spotlight. The uniforms were widely noted as very ugly through numerous fan opinions and articles.

The Kelly-green uniform era came during a decent stretch for the Eagles. They had five playoff appearances but never made it to the NFC Championship between the 1985-1995 seasons. The NFL East was very powerful during this time with the entire division racking up six Super Bowls during that span.

The Eagles are far from the Super Bowl conversation but are looking to consistently make the playoffs moving forward, striving for 10+ win seasons shortly.

The Eagles’ Kelly-green uniforms are set to return to Philly in 2023. Will you be picking one up?
