Cleveland Guardians Option A Young Star To The Minors On Sunday
The Cleveland Guardians season has been a roller coaster ride, and it has been enjoyable. However, there have been a few bumps along the way, including starting pitching.
When former CY Young award-winning pitcher Shane Bieber was lost for the year in early April with Tommy John's Surgery, you knew the club would suffer, but it was way worse than what people expected.
Triston McKenzie is one of the bright young pitchers on the staff who had a sprained UCL last season. He only saw four starts last year, and this season, the injury still bothered him because he had been through a rough three months. He was sent down to the minor leagues earlier in the week.
Cleveland did go out on Friday and trade for pitcher Spencer Howard from the San Francisco Giants, and he was added to the 25-man roster on Sunday; for him to be called up to the main roster, a player had to be sent down to Triple-A, and that was starting pitcher Logan Allen, who has a 5.67 ERA in 18 starts this season. Allen made his major league debut last season and pitched pretty well for a rookie, but he fell off significantly this season. Cleveland could never send him down to Triple-A because they didn't have enough starting arms to get through, and they had to rely on Allen even if he was having bad outings.
Hopefully, Allen can work out his issues in the minors, come back either at the end of the season or next year, and become the pitcher we all know he can become.
