Cleveland Guardians Pitcher Gavin Williams Shined In His Second Start Of The Season, Which Is A Great Sign For The Team

The Cleveland Guardians can't catch a break with starting pitching this season, and one of the guys they relied on to break through was second-year starter Gavin Williams.

Unfortunately, Williams suffered an elbow injury in spring training and didn't make a start for the club until July 3rd against the worst team in the league, the Chicago White Sox. Williams gave up five runs on seven hits in four innings pitched last week, but he turned it around against the Detroit Tigers on Monday night.

Williams pitched 5.1 innings in a no-decision, giving up only four hits and striking out five without giving up a run. Cleveland ended up losing the game 1-0, but the good news was that Williams looked great, and hopefully, that starts a run of great outings from the second-year pitcher.

It's no secret that the Guardians need to add starting pitching at the trade deadline in three weeks, but there might not be a lot out there with many teams still in the playoff hunt and many pitchers who would be on the market going down with an injury.

Cleveland has to improve its rotation, and getting Williams back to normal would be a nice boost, but it can't be relied on. The Guardians must do everything possible to add a starter at the deadline. If they can't, they need to add a bullpen arm and make the best bullpen in baseball even deeper.
