Coffee ‘n’ Jets: Jets Sign Veteran Tackle To Bolster Struggling Offensive Line
With three of their tackles on IR or struggling with injury, the Jets bring in veteran tackle Mike Remmers. Is this a savvy move by Joe Doulgas or has he left it too late to add anyone to this group who can make a meaningful contribution?
It was reported on Monday evening that Jets have signed veteran tackle, Mike Remmers to their practice squad, with the intention of adding him to their active roster before Sunday’s game against the Steelers.

Jets Tackle Injuries Mounting
With Duane Brown still on IR and George Fant’s status in question this was a move Joe Douglas absolutely had to make. You could argue that with the way the line has been performing, particularly on the left-hand side, that he needed to start adding other pieces to do something different regardless. Fant ended up leaving the field late into the Jets dismal performance against the Bengals in week three. Connor McDermott came in and proved why a move like this was necessary and has been for several weeks.
Before anyone gets too excited, it is late September, and this guy was available, so expectations should match. That being said, there is a possibility that without an addition, the Jets would have been starting McDermott at left tackle against Pittsburgh this Sunday so very few players in the league today could make that situation worse.
Fans of other teams probably only know Remmers as part of the O-Line that almost got Patrick Mahomes killed in their 2020 Superbowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This may be quite a confusing decision by JD to bring in a player who’s played the majority of his career snaps at right tackle when the majority of our injury issues at the moment are on the left side. But the pond isn’t full of edible fish at the moment:

But this is as much about overall depth as it is about best player available. Remmers has played 957 of his 6734 snaps have been at left tackle, but he’s also taken snaps at both guard spots so will provide some veteran depth across the line. Remmers has at least got a lot of experience in the league which includes two Superbowl visits, and at this point in the process you can’t expect to be adding pro bowl talent off the street.

Quite how the formation will shake out if Fant does have to miss time will be interesting to see. Mitchell has had a better than expected start at right tackle, but he’s still a rookie, and moving about the line could hamper his development as well as getting Zach Wilson hospitalised in the process.
All fingers are crossed that Fant can play this Sunday; if he can it’ll be nice to know that there is some legitimate depth for the offensive line which is what a move like adding Remmers provides.
