Cole Kmet Has A Lot Of Competition For Fantasy Value

Cole Kmet is one of the trickier players to evaluate at the tight end position this season. He is coming off a career year with 73 catches for 719 yards and 6 touchdowns as the Bears' number 2 target last season. This year, Kmet is expected to be the Bears' fourth option in the receiving game behind D.J. Moore, the newly acquired Keenan Allen, and the 9th overall pick in the 2024 draft, Rome Odunze.

Additionally, the Bears signed D’andre Swift to a multi-year deal, and he is an excellent receiver out of the backfield. Tight end Gerald Everett is a solid player as well. It’s safe to assume Kmet will be fighting for Target in a way he never has before with all the new additions to the offense. Along with playing with new receiving talent, Kmet has a new quarterback as well, as the Bears selected Caleb Williams as the first pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Outside of the Bears bringing in new weapons it is the change in QB play that may affect Kmet the most.

Last season, Justin Fields targeted tight ends on 24.5% of his passes, which led to Kmet seeing an uptick in production. Calem Williams, on the other hand, only targeted tight ends on 9.7% of his passes, with 72.5% of them going to wide receivers. While those are Williams' numbers in college, it is fair to assume they will translate, especially because the Bears have an elite receiving core that Williams should fall in love with. The one way Kmet can be productive for fantasy is by being a red zone target for the rookie.

Everyone knows that rookie QBs love tight ends, and while the receivers may lead the Bears downfield, Kmet could clean it up in the red zone, which could make him a useful asset in fantasy. All in all, Kmet has his work cut out for him simply because of the talent added, but it could make up for a possible lack of targets in the end zone.

Our consensus projections for Kmet in the 2024 season are 59 receptions, 593 yards, and 5 touchdowns.
