College Basketball: Two Storied Programs Are About To Battle

The rivalry between the University of Kentucky and the University of Kansas in college basketball is one of the most intense and storied in the sport. The two teams, both with rich histories and traditions, have been competing against each other for over a century. The rivalry is fueled by a combination of factors, including geographic proximity, historical connections, and competitive parity. The historical connection between the two teams dates back to the early 20th century, adding an extra layer of intrigue to the rivalry.

The University of Kansas was coached by Dr. James Naismith, the inventor of basketball. Naismith's influence on the sport is immeasurable, and his legacy is deeply ingrained in the Kansas basketball program. On the other hand, the University of Kentucky was coached by Adolph Rupp, one of Naismith's students. Rupp, who was born and raised in Kansas, brought a hard-nosed, disciplined style of play to Kentucky that contrasted with the more free-flowing, offensive-oriented style of play favored by Naismith.

This contrast in styles added an extra layer of intrigue to the rivalry. Rupp's disciplined, defensive-oriented approach clashed with Naismith's more fluid, offensive-minded philosophy. This stylistic clash was a microcosm of the larger cultural differences between the two states, with Kentucky's blue-collar, hardworking ethos contrasting with Kansas's more laid-back, free-spirited attitude. This cultural clash added a sociological dimension to the rivalry, making it about more than just basketball.

The rivalry intensified in the 1950s and 1960s when both teams became national powerhouses. During this period, Kentucky and Kansas regularly faced off in high-stakes games, including several in the NCAA Tournament. These games often had national championship implications, adding to the intensity of the rivalry. The competitive parity between the two teams also contributed to the rivalry. Both teams have consistently been among the top programs in college basketball, with each having won multiple national championships.

In recent years, the rivalry has continued to thrive, with both teams regularly ranked among the top in the nation. The games between Kentucky and Kansas are always highly anticipated and draw large television audiences. The rivalry is a testament to the passion and intensity of college basketball, and it continues to be one of the most compelling in the sport.

This week Kansas announced the extension of Coach Bill Self’s contract surpassing him over Coach John Calipari as the game's highest-paid coach. Last month when the NCAA took away 15 wins from Kansas for rule violations, Kentucky regained the most all-time wins ever in college basketball. This past spring both schools battled over the transfer of former Michigan Center Hunter Dickinson with Kansas coming out on top.

On Tuesday Nov 14, both schools will take the court in Chicago in the State Farm Champions Classic in the late game after Michigan State and Duke play each other. Kansas and Dickinson are the preseason number one team and Kentucky comes in 16th with a young but extremely talented, loaded freshman class. Kentucky leads the overall series 24 wins - 11 losses with Kansas winning last season. Who will come out on top to begin this college basketball season? Which team will add to one of college basketball's most historical storied rivalries?
