Cowboys Re-Sign Safety Jayron Kearse To Two-Year, $10M Deal

Another day, another free agent being re-signed in Dallas. According to Jeremy Fowler, Jayron Kearse and the Cowboys have agreed to a two-year deal. The deal is worth $10 million but could increase up to $11 million via incentives.

Dallas is notorious for taking the cheap route on safeties. The best safety in recent memory for me would be Roy Williams. The position has just never been a priority for this franchise. However, Kearse has now proven that Dan Quinn cares about re-signing solid talent at the safety position.

When Kearse was signed by Dallas last year, I doubt they expected him to play as well as he did. Kearse finished with career-highs in tackles (101), interceptions (two), and sacks (one). That stat line is enough for him to earn an extension with Dallas.

The Journeyman Jayron Kearse

Kearse was selected by the Vikings in the 2017 draft out of Clemson. After finishing his four-year $2.4 million in Minnesota, the Lions scooped him up on a one-year deal. Kearse saw nothing but trouble in Detroit. He was suspended for the first three weeks of the 2020 season for violating the NFL’s substance-abuse policy.

Kearse was cut by Detroit in December and signed to the Ravens practice squad. A few months later, Dallas brought him in. Fast forward to now and he is inked for a two-year extension in Dallas. Not every path is easy but Kearse has overcome his difficulties and Dan Quinn believes in him.

Why Signing Kearse Is Important

The truth here is that the Cowboys cleared up over $26 million in cap space but have not done anything with it yet. Besides the signing of James Washington and Dante Fowler, the free-agent market has not had the Cowboys’ name pop up much. While it is not a fresh name, Kearse had to be a top priority player to re-sign.

As we get further into the free agency period, it seemed like Dallas would let Kearse walk. Thankfully, Dallas ponied up the money to keep a solid player around. Jayron Kearse fit into Dan Quinn’s system well and now he is being rewarded. Moves like this are easing the mind of Cowboys fans.
