Dalvin Cook Is Ring Chasing With His New NFL Team
If there was one running back a lot of people would argue was the best in the league, many would answer Dalvin Cook. Especially with how phenomenal he was with the Minnesota Vikings. He's been a free agent for a while now, but he finally has been signed. The Dallas Cowboys have agreed to sign Cook to a contract.
The terms and length of the contract have not been revealed, but this is another interesting move for a team that supposedly is going "all in". What's known about this deal is that Cook will be on the practice squad to start, but will likely be on the active roster by Week 1. This move wasn't a shock as Cook visited with the Cowboys not long ago and could be useful on this team.
Durability Concerns
Cook is now 29 years old and he has never been the same since he left Minnesota. A big reason why is due to injuries, especially when he had shoulder surgery in February of 2023. The craziest part is that he has had shoulder issues since 2014. In 2019, it got worse as it constantly kept dislocating. That's not all, Cook has also had issues with his ankle and even his groin.
History Of Ring Chasing
Let's be real here, Dalvin Cook has been ring-chasing the past two years now. Last year proved it when he requested his release from the Jets and then immediately signed with Baltimore as they were playoff contenders. Cook declined hard last season as he only gained 214 rushing yards, scoring zero touchdowns.
As a pass catcher, he barely was able to make 15 receptions for 78 yards with the Jets. In Baltimore, he did a whole lot of nothing with the team and only played one game as a Raven.
What Does This Mean For The Running Back Group?
Cook could potentially emerge as the Cowboys’ lead back as Dallas doesn't have a lot of great options. Rico Dowdle and Ezekiel Elliott have not impressed in training camp or the preseason. It's likely going to be a split backfield between some combination of Dowdle, Elliot, and Cook.
As for fantasy football fans, Cook isn't an immediate add until he starts to stand out in Dallas. It is still unclear how Dallas will utilize the running game this season with Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle on the team.
One thing is for sure, this is bad news for RB Deuce Vaughn. With Elliot and Dowdle on the roster and Cook added to the team, it's a clear sign Vaughn's snaps on offense are going to go down. Unless an injury occurs in deeper leagues, Vaughn should be on the waiver wire in fantasy football.
