Decoding Jerry Jones

Now that the NFL 2025 season is in its sixth week, people are finalizing their assessments and projections of who has the potential to advance to the playoffs and ultimately the Superbowl. The Cowboys are one of the few teams facing uncertainty, especially with their 3-2 record and inconsistent form.

The playoffs and the Super Bowl were Jerry Jones' target goals for his team this year. This is not to say that he did not have aspirations for the team in previous years. This year he was holding out for a change. This is part of the basis for Jones' decision to offer Dak Prescott a sizable contract. He put most of his chips on Prescott.

However, their potential has not materialized, and the Cowboys' on-field performance has been subpar. They are struggling to secure victories by narrow margins, and any given Sunday could spell disaster for their shaky season.

Strategic Debacle

What is the plan? This has been a nagging question for several weeks. Is there a plan at all? It seemed that finally there was some clarification. The mention of a "Blow it Up Model" piqued some interest having some believe that this is exactly what the team needs.

Is this the model that is really on the table?

A Recipe For Disappointment: Cowboy's And Cohesion

The Cowboys appear to lack chemistry. They are frequently out of sync on the field. This is underscored by simple blunders, lack of connection, and dismal performances. What is disappointing is the decline in their performance from early 2023 in comparison to this season.

As the Athlete notes, "According to TruMedia, the Cowboys are averaging 4.3 points in the first quarter this season. It’s middle of the pack in the NFL but nowhere near enough to pick up a faltering defense. Last year, the Cowboys ranked second in the NFL in first-quarter points with 6.4, trailing only the Detroit Lions (6.5).

Even quarterback Dak Prescott has admitted a need for improvement.

Is It Time To Clean House

Despite having talent they have failed to work together. They do not effectively use their skills. Before Prescott, many blamed former quarterback Tony Romo for the team's struggles. Post-2023 Packers game MSN noted,

"Following the game, everyone is saying that the Cowboys have just gone from one disappointing quarterback to the next. "

People have also blamed owner Jerry Jones for the team's failures.

What if it is the entire unit from top to bottom? If one changes out multiple elements and gets the same result it may be time to start over again.

A Calculated Strategy

Recent statements by Jones have many confused. Jerry Jones mentioned pre-season that the team was taking an "all-or-nothing approach."

Athlon notes, the idea was to go "all in" in 2024. The plan was to retain important players Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and incoming rookie Micah Parsons while keeping cap space open for prospective acquisitions next year. That was how Jerry Jones envisioned constructing a winning team.

But it is rumored that Jones has been speaking of a soft build.

Organizational Overhaul

Is it all or nothing or something else? There seems to be some confusion. A soft build is evidently a much more tepid approach to restructuring. So, did Jones state that this was the direction? The answer to that is no as well. Jones recently clarified that he said nothing about a soft build.

The conflict in what the strategy is leaves room for outsiders to speculate that perhaps no one really knows maybe not even Jones.

What Are We Doing?

No one has a clue. Something must certainly change. The existing methods and strategies are not properly addressing the fundamental problems. The statement holds that repeated actions have the same effects. Perhaps a more audacious approach is required.

Flip-flopping and lack of a concrete direction in the upper ranks tend to reflect in the lower ranks. The disorganization above most surely is an indicator of a lack of cohesion on the field.

The Cowboys must turn things around quickly. Winning by such a narrow margin does not indicate a strong and determined team. This type of edge-of-your-seat dynamic works better for films. In football, it does not engender confidence or security. At this point its best the fans don't know what the strategy is. No solidified plan makes it a lot easier to pass the buck.

The Cowboys Are At A Crossroad

For fan It's important to continue watching and see how this season pans out. Will this be a topic of discussion throughout the season? At this point, everything seems uncertain. The erraticism exhibited by the entire organization has many thinking whether Jones said it or not a blow it up model is exactly what is needed across the board.
