DK Metcalf Signs Massive 3-Year Extension With Seahawks, Will Anchor Offense

On Thursday afternoon, the Seattle Seahawks and DK Metcalf finalized a 3-year, $72 million contract extension. The Seahawks offense will now look to Metcalf as its leader for the foreseeable future.

The deal is done. The Seahawks and receiver DK Metcalf put pen to paper on Thursday in agreement on a $72 million dollar extension that will last three seasons. While full contract details have not been released yet, it can be deduced that Metcalf will make more on average per year than Terry McLaurin, but less than AJ Brown.

In this deal, it is clear to see that the Seahawks will use DK Metcalf as the focal point of their offense in the coming seasons. It was evident in the time of Russell Wilson’s injury last season that Metcalf is capable of elevating mediocre quarterback play. This will be important in both plausible outcomes at quarterback in the near future: Geno Smith or Drew Lock earns a starting role, or a rookie quarterback is drafted in 2023. Either way, there will likely be no Josh Allen- or Patrick Mahomes-like player in the huddle anytime soon, so it’s important to have a physical playmaker like Metcalf locked up.

A coach in Pete Carroll that is known for wanting to be dominant in the run game has now made two long-term commitments to receivers. Tyler Lockett is under contract through the 2025 season, and now Metcalf will be locked up through 2025 as well. The Seahawks also picked up dynamic tight end Noah Fant in the Russell Wilson trade. With the team poised to select a quarterback in the draft next year with one of their two first-round picks, this is an offense that may be looking to turn more pass-heavy and join the rest of the league in relying on the passing game.
