Dolphins Are Expected To Let This Star Player Hit The Free Agent Market
According to ESPN on Sunday, the Miami Dolphins will not be tagging defensive lineman Christian Wilkins and letting him test out the free agent market.
Wilkins was drafted number 13 overall by the Dolphins in 2019 out of Clemson and was one of the main reasons Clemson beat Alabama in the National Championship a few months prior because of his outstanding defensive line play.
Wilkins's first five seasons in Miami have been excellent. He has been able to see the field for almost every game and has played in all 17 games in the last three seasons.
The 28-year-old had his best NFL season in 2023 when he recorded a career-high nine sacks. The most sacks he ever had in a season before last year was in 2021 when he recorded 4.5.
Wilkins is one of many Miami defenders who have likely seen their time end on South Beach.
Earlier this off-season, the Dolphins announced they would release cornerback Xavien Howard and defensive end Emmanuel Ogbah.
The Dolphins are coming off a roller-coaster season after starting the year off red hot, looking like one of the best teams in the NFL that could win the Super Bowl and then came crashing down the last few weeks of the season, letting the Buffalo Bills comeback and win the AFC East. Miami would lose in the Wild Card round to the Kansas City Chiefs, ending a season that had so much hope from the start.
Now that Wilkins could be out of the fold for the Dolphins, the team must hit on a defensive lineman in this upcoming NFL Draft. Some names to watch are Jer'Zhan Newton from Illinois Bryon Murphy ll and T'Vondre Sweat from Texas, Kris Jenkins from Michigan, and many more.
The Dolphins will look very different on the defensive side of the ball next season, and let's see if they can put it all together and finally win a playoff game.
