Dotson’s Fit In The Eagles Offense

Howie Roseman did it again. On paper, The Philadelphia Eagles already had one of the top offenses in the National Football League heading into the 2024 season. Believe it or not, they just got even better.

The Eagles traded for wide receiver Jahan Dotson on Thursday. It was a rare divisional trade that sent Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick to the Washington Commanders for a 2025 third-round pick and a pair of seventh-round picks. There were rumors that he could be on the move, and the Eagles jumped all over it.

The Eagles were searching for their No. 3 receiver. They found him in Dotson. Parris Campbell, John Ross, Johnny Wilson, and Britain Covey were all in the mix for the third wide receiver spot before the trade. Dotson should now be the clear No. 3 receiver in 2024 and potentially for years to come. He’ll undoubtedly be the best No. 3 receiver the Eagles have had behind stars A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

Dotson was drafted by the Commanders 16th overall in the 2022 NFL Draft. The 24-year-old has hauled in 84 passes for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns across his first two NFL seasons. He earned Rookie of the Week honors twice in 2022.

Dotson has experience playing both in the slot and on the outside, but he’ll likely be primarily used in the slot with the Eagles. Opposing defenses will have their work cut out for themselves, having to face Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, Dallas Goedert, Brown, Smith, and now Dotson all in the same offense. Not to mention, the Eagles have one of the best offensive lines in the league.

It’s an interesting move by the Commanders to trade a young receiver going into just his third season in the NFL, especially since he’s had success in both the NFL and college. They have star receiver Terry McLaurin but not much behind him. Dyami Brown, who only has 476 yards and three touchdowns in three seasons, looks to assume the No. 2 receiver spot. 2024 third-round pick Luke McCaffrey and veterans Olamide Zaccheaus, Jamison Crowder, Byron Pringle and Martavis Bryant are also in the mix to compete for snaps.

Dotson Returns To Keystone State To Join Eagles Offense

Dotson has many ties to Pennsylvania. He was born in Newark, New Jersey, under two hours from Philadelphia. He attended Nazareth Area High School in eastern Pennsylvania. Dotson originally committed to UCLA for college but decided to rescind his commitment to attend Pennsylvania State University instead.

Dotson immediately received playing time in his freshman year at Penn State in 2018. He played in eight games and had 203 yards. He had 27 receptions for 488 yards and five touchdowns in his sophomore season, 52 receptions for 884 yards and eight touchdowns in his junior season, and 91 receptions for 1,182 yards and 12 touchdowns in his senior season. He was named first-team All-Big Ten in 2021 and third-team All-Big Ten in 2020. Dotson consistently improved each year in college and proved to be a playmaker in the Nittany Lions offense.

The Eagles will have a lot of fun with Dotson in the offense. He adds firepower and play-making ability to an offense that already had more than enough. The sky’s the limit for the Eagles’ offense this year.
