Drake London Has Everything He Needs To Be A Fantasy Stud
Drake London should finally get his chance to show his potential this year. The Falcons signed veteran Quarterback Kirk Cousins to a four-year, 180 million-dollar contract with $100 million guaranteed. They then surprised the football world by selecting Michael Penix Jr. with the 8th overall pick in the NFL draft.
Even if Cousins suffers an unfortunate injury, Penix Jr. would still likely be the best passing quarterback London has played with so far. Kirk Cousins had the 7th highest completion rate (48.0%) on passes that traveled 20+ yards downfield last season (minimum of 20). Penix Jr. also made a name for himself by frequently throwing the ball downfield at Washington.
He had the second most pass attempts of 20+ yards at the collegiate level last season, with 92 pass attempts, and completed 42.4%. London was targeted downfield just 18 times, but that was more due to the quarterbacks on the roster and Arthur Smith calling the plays. This year Zac Robinson will take over as offensive coordinator for the Falcons who comes from the Sean McVay coaching tree.
The Rams targeted the Wide Receiver position on 71.7% of their pass attempts last year, leading the league by 3.5%. The Falcons targeted the Wide Receiver position on just 41.2% of their targets, last in the league by 10%. The Falcons also threw the ball the 8th fewest and the 2nd fewest in the league the past two years, respectively. If the Falcons creep back toward the league average in both categories, then London will see a massive uptick in volume this year.
London has proven he can get open to demand the volume as well. This past season, he was in the 81st percentile in success rate vs. press coverage, 77th percentile vs. zone coverage, and 68th percentile vs. man coverage (per ReceptionPerception). London has yet to break 1,000 receiving yards, but the sky's the limit this year in a new offense and with a quarterback upgrade (or two).
Our consensus projections for London in the 2024 season would be: 107 receptions, 1428 yards, 8 touchdowns through the air and 1 carry for 4 yards and 0 rushing touchdowns.
