Drake Maye Has A Path To Future Fantasy Greatness
Drake Maye is much less equipped earlier in his career due to the lack of proven talent at WR and Left Tackle that Daniels and Williams had, but during his two full seasons at UNC, where 618 completions (952 attempts), 64.9% completion rate for 8018 yards (8.4 yards per attempt, league average is 7 YPA) for 63 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. He also added 302 carries for 1209 yards (4.0 yards per carry) and 16 touchdowns.
As mentioned, the supporting cast for Maye in New England is not proven but does have an upside in the future if Polk, Baker, and Douglas all turn out to be good pros. People project the Patriots as a slower offense, but Alex Van Pelt and the Browns averaged 63 plays a game over the last three years with over 50% passing.
I believe AVP will bring that pace and philosophy to New England. The biggest worry, however, is when Drake Maye will be the starting quarterback. At the moment, Jacoby Brissett is the starter. There is a chance that Maye could earn the job throughout training camp, but it is unlikely. If I were forced to bet on when Maye will start, I would say around Week 6.
Dynasty managers should draft him if he falls, or you can wait at most a season without him starting. Otherwise, Bo Nix or trading out might be better short-term ideas. Unfortunately, as a Patriots fan, I can not advise fantasy managers to target Maye in redraft leagues unless he shows out in multiple starts and is grabbed on the waiver wire. However, if Maye does turn out to be the player he has the potential to be, he could be a top 5 fantasy QB in the future
Our consensus projections for Maye in the 2024 season would be: 366 completions, 4058 yards, 24 touchdowns, 13 interceptions through the air, and 56 carries for 236 yards and 4 rushing touchdowns.
