Expectations For Terence Steele In 2022

In this piece, we will be discussing if Terence Steele is the right fit to take over for the right tackle position. After the recent release of La’el Collins this past month, the expectations of Steele to take over the starting duties full time have begun. One of the main questions here is whether or not Steele is ready to take over as the starting right tackle for the Cowboys

Terence Steele, Right Tackle

Height- 6’6”, Weight- 318 lbs

College- Texas Tech, undrafted in 2020

In Steele’s first year with the Cowboys, he was starting right tackle due to injuries of La’el Collins and former backup Cameron Erving. They lost Collins for the season due to an undisclosed injury and Irving missed time due to different injuries. This brought in Steele as the fourth offensive tackle in the Super Bowl era, and the ninth in league history to start 14 games as an undrafted rookie. That year he struggled, giving up crucial sacks in a couple of games. In the final month, he started to improve and played in all 16 games, starting in 14 of them.

This year, Steele started in 10 games due to Collins’s suspension from week two to eight and then three games at left tackle for Tyron Smith.  He showed a large overall improvement from the year before. Against the Los Angeles Chargers, Steele stopped one of the best edge rushers in the league, Joey Bosa. Bosa finished without getting a sack, tackles for loss, or a QB hit on Dak Prescott. Though he didn’t do it all on his own, he admitted the Cowboys had one or two players shading on his right side in pass protection. That doesn’t take away from how well he explodes out of his stance with power and confidence.

What Does Steele Brings To The Table In 2022?

That power and natural instinct helped him develop into a dominant run blocker, a trait he doesn’t get enough credit for. This year Steele has vastly improved from the season before as an overall offensive tackle. He still needs to improve as a pass protector but as a run blocker, he dominates. The Cowboys show they have confidence that Steele will be a good starting right tackle.

In all honesty, I believe the right tackle position is where he needs to stay. In those three games he played left tackle, he struggled. He didn’t have that desired lateral quickness you look for in a left tackle. However, I believe Steele can be a good starting right tackle for the Cowboys. In his past two years, he has shown nothing but improvement. Steele will continue to improve as a right tackle for more years to come.
