Former EuroLeague MVP leaving the NBA?
The 28 year-old Sasha Vezenkov has announced he does not intend on returning to the Sacramento Kings in the 2024-2025 NBA season, following his rookie season with the franchise.
Hailing from Bulgaria, Vezenkov took the EuroLeague by storm in 2022-23, averaging 17.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per night, he quickly gained the reputation as an absolute sniper from 3-point territory, shooting just under 40% from downtown on the season.
All of this was plenty of reason for Kings fans to be excited when Monte McNair brought him on to the team, however a mix of injuries and lack of fit meant Vezenkov didn’t see the floor very frequently.
The 6’9 forward played in only 42 of the team’s 82 regular season games and averaged just 12.2 minutes in those contests.
His ‘per 36’ numbers show that he was capable of being a solid offensive player in the NBA, averaging 15.9 ppg and 6.8 rpg per 36 minutes. However, Venzenkov just wasn’t a perfect fit on the Kings, a team with an abundance of solid Power Forward/Small Forward builds. He and Trey Lyles effectively were playing the same role, as a backup PF playing spot Center minutes, something that just didn’t work defensively for the Kings, particularly with Vezenkov.
The Bulgarian native’s NBA future is up in the air right now, as he has made it clear he will not be returning to California’s capital but has not ruled out the possibility of playing in the NBA next season.
