Former All-Pro Player Retires From NFL
NFL off-seasons are filled with retirements, and you can add another big name to the list of players calling it a career. Former Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson, who was the centerpiece in the infamous DeAndre Hopkins in 2020, has retired from the National Football League. The 32-year-old running back was once one of the best running backs in the league, and now his playing days are over.
Running Back David Johnson Retires From The NFL
David Johnson was selected in the third round of the 2015 NFL Draft. The former Northern Iowa star immediately made an impact in his first game, catching a 55-yard touchdown pass. While the running back did not start a game until late December 2015, it was just the beginning of a bright future in the NFL.
Johnson's 2016 season was one of the best seasons in recent memory by a running back. Despite the Cardinals missing the playoffs with a 7-8-1 record, he had 1,239 yards on the ground, over 2,000 total yards, and 20 total touchdowns. He had 15 straight games with over 100 yards, was named First-Team All-Pro, and participated in the Pro Bowl.
Unfortunately, he suffered a season-ending wrist injury in 2017 after only playing one game. Thankfully, he bounced back in 2018 with over 1,300 yards and ten touchdowns. After a down year in 2019, Johnson was traded to the Houston Texans, ending his Cardinals career with over 3,000 rushing yards and 2,000 receiving yards in five seasons.
Johnson would only start 16 more games in two seasons with the Texans, rushing for 919 yards. He added 539 receiving yards and nine touchdowns. He finished his career with the New Orleans Saints in 2022 and has not played since.
David Johnson will be forever known as an Arizona Cardinals legend. He finished in the Cardinals history books as tenth all-time in rushing, third in rushing touchdowns, 29th in receiving yards, and 28th in touchdown receptions.
