Former Penn State Star Gets New Chance In NFL

A former Penn State Nittany Lion is getting another opportunity in the National Football League. Former PSU quarterback Trace McSorley signed with the Washington Commanders earlier this week. This will be the sixth team for the signal-caller since he was drafted in 2019 by the Baltimore Ravens.

Trace McSorley Looking For Another Shot At Making NFL Roster

Trace McSorley hasn’t found his rhythm in the NFL after a successful college career. He set Penn State records for wins, passing / rushing yards and touchdowns, and was one of the most popular athletes of the late 2010s.

McSorley was drafted in the sixth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. Expected to compete for the backup position behind quarterback Lamar Jackson, McSorley was third-string behind Robert Griffin III. In his three years in Baltimore, he only played in three games where he threw his first career NFL touchdown pass.

McSorley was released by Baltimore and signed by the Arizona Cardinals in 2021. He started his first career game in 2022 after quarterbacks Kyler Murray and Colt McCoy suffered injuries. In six games of action, McSorley completed 45 out of his 83 pass attempts for 412 yards and five interceptions. He did not throw a touchdown pass as a Cardinal.

McSorley Joins Sixth Team In Five Years

After stints in Baltimore, Arizona, New England, Chicago, and Pittsburgh, the kid from Ashburn, Virginia will play 54 minutes from where he grew up. He will look to make the Washington Commanders roster and compete for a backup spot behind Jayden Daniels. The 28-year-old will battle with rookie quarterback Sam Hartman and former Titans first-round pick Marcus Mariota for a roster spot.
