Should the Patriots try and acquire Jalen Ramsey to bolster their cornerback room?
The AFC has become an extremely competitive conference featured with numerous star receivers. All the top teams in the AFC and NFL have elite receivers. In the AFC East itself, New England will have to go against Stefon Diggs, Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle, and a receiver on the rise in Garrett Wilson. With a relatively young cornerback room, and Jalen Ramsey potentially being available on the trade market, here is why New England should make a push to acquire the superstar
The Patriots Need A Cornerback
As mentioned before, the AFC has become increasingly offensive-oriented and more dynamic with star receivers on the outside. New England has a good cornerback room currently with Jonathan Jones as their number-one receiver. The Patriots have two young yet promising young players Jack Jones and Marcus Jones. Jonathan Jones is currently a free agent, and if he departs New England will be in the market for a cornerback.
Ramsey is one of the premier cornerbacks in the league, ranking as a top-five cornerback. Jalen Ramsey in 2022 had four interceptions. Ramsey was targeted 86 times and allowed 56 receptions. Jalen Ramsey is one of the best-cover cornerbacks in the NFL with a player grade of 86.
Ramsey is on a five-year $100,000,000 contract. Ramsey is one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL if not the best. Having a true elite cornerback is rare in the NFL currently, as there are more elite receivers than there are cornerbacks. Having a lockdown cornerback would be a massive advantage for New England and it would help them match up against elite talent. Ramsey would be a great fit with a young developing secondary.
Helps The Patriots Against Dynamic AFC Teams
The main reason New England a deal should happen is because of how dynamic the AFC is. The Patriots are top five in cap space. In the AFC, the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen are likely going to be the best quarterbacks in the game. Elite receivers like Tyreek Hill, Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Davante Adams, and many more explosive receivers will be there. The Patriots don’t have an elite receiver and an offense to match up with the top teams in the AFC, but they can assemble a defense that gives them a good chance against any dynamic team in the NFL.
New England has a great defensive scheme that allows them to match up against star receivers and limit them. Adding an elite cornerback would put New England’s defense over the top.
Having a cornerback like Jalen Ramsey would be great for Jack Jones and Marcus Jones too. As they won’t have to face the elite receivers right away and get to play with a veteran. Getting Ramsey would fortify the Patriots’ secondary and establish them as arguably the best defense in the NFL. With an elite pass rusher in Matthew Judon, and a breakout star in Kyle Dugger, Jalen Ramsey as the lead cornerback gives New England a great chance at stopping the best teams in NFL on defense.
