Giants Win Over Bengals; Quick Takeaways

The Giants faced off against the Bengals in week 2 of the preseason. The Giants won the game but faced injuries. Additionally, the competition for a roster spot got competitive for some backup wide receivers. Finally, Davis Webb had a fantastic game at QB for the Giants.

The NY Giants beat the Bengals, 25-22 in week 2 of the preseason last night. While they won the game, the team faced a lot of injuries. First, Kayvon Thibodeaux went out of the game with a scary injury in the 2nd quarter. Then, early in the second quarter, Thad Moss (son of Randy Moss) went very low on a block and hit Thibodeaux’s knee in a terrifying sight. The first-round pick did wave for a stretcher but could walk off the field under his power. After the game, he did say he was alright.

He is getting more tests today, which will show the extent of the injury. According to the postgame interview, the G-Men dodged a bullet. Despite this, the block was still very cheap. Going for the knees should be outlawed by the NFL. It’s a very cheap block. You should be able to go for a block straight up and not go for someone at the knees.

Darrian Beavers, the Big Blue’s sixth-round draft pick, also went out with an injury. During the third quarter of the game, Beavers was making a tackle when he injured his knee. It’s unclear whether he will be able to return next week or for week 1 of the regular season. Beavers would get a lot of regular season snaps at the linebacker position. He was most likely going to be the 2nd linebacker off the bench behind Micah Mcfadden.

Injuries are a trend of bad luck for the NY Giants. Six of eleven draft picks have been injured in the preseason this year. Kayvon Thibodeaux (knee-return time unclear), Cor’Dale Flott (Groin-questionable for next week’s game), Dane Belton (fractured collarbone-questionable for next week’s game), Darrien Beavers (knee-return time unclear), Marcus Mckethan (Injured reserve, out for season), and Josh Ezeudu (undisclosed-questionable for next week game) are the rookies currently injured right now.

Giants Receivers

In more positive news, the NY Giants’ race for a backup wide receiver roster spot got more competitive last night. Alex Bachman had 11 receptions for 122 yards. Bachman had the game-winning touchdown. While his place on the team may be secured because he is good on special teams, David Sills V, Keelen Doss, and Collin Johnson spots are not.

The three of them continue to battle it out for a roster spot. With Kenny Golladay, Kadurius Toney, Wan’Dale Robinson, and Sterling Shepard at wide receiver, the NY Giants have room for only two more wide receivers. Considering Darius Slayton will probably take the 5th spot, leaving only one place. n yesterday’s game, Sills had five receptions for 56 yards, Doss had three receptions for 33 yards, and Johnson had three receptions for 34 yards. So the fight continues for the last wide receiver roster spot on the Giants.

Davis Webb

Finally, Davis Webb had a tremendous game at QB for the NY Giants. He took over for Tyrod Taylor late in the second quarter after Taylor got his reps. Webb threw for 204 yards on 22 completions. He threw for two touchdowns. Webb led the Giants down the field with around 3:00 minutes to go. The Giants won the game 25-22 after the Bengals’ drive failed at the end of the game.

Webb will probably not move up the depth chart after this game. Taylor is securely the 2nd QB on the depth chart. However, at some point of the season, Taylor might take over for Jones via an injury or multiple poor performances by Jones. Then would take Taylor’s numerous poor performances or injuries for Webb to play in the regular season. Considering those things, it is unlikely that Webb will start a game this regular season.

Although that is true, Webb will provide great insight as he has spent time with the NY Giants quarterback coach (Shea Tierney) and head coach Brian Daboll before this season. Before this season, Webb played for the Buffalo Bills. Tierney and Daboll worked for the Bills last year (Tierney-assistant Bills QB coach and Daboll- Bills offensive coordinator). His experience allows Webb to help Taylor and Jones this season immensely.

The Giants finish the preseason against the Jets on August 28 at 1:00. The game is on the NFL network. The week after, the Giants start the regular season against Tennessee on the road.
