Green Bay Packers Make Huge Defensive Acquisition
The Green Bay Packers have one of the youngest rosters in the NFL. But after finishing 9-8 and winning a playoff game, the expectations are very high for next season and the team has already made some surprising moves including releasing fan-favorite Aaron Jones and signing running back Josh Jacobs. Now the Packers have made a move many fans have requested.
Packers Find Solution At Safety With McKinney
The Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with New York Giants safety Xavier McKinney. The contract is for four years worth 68 million dollars. After losing safety Darnell Savage in free agency to the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Packers finally found their new safety of the future.
McKinney was drafted in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of Alabama. The 24-year-old has had a great start to his career intercepting nine passes including one pick-six. He also has two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries to his name as well. In 2023, he played all 17 games, making a career-high in tackles, fumble recoveries, and three interceptions.
He had an 87.8 PFF grade last season as he was one of the top safeties in the NFL. McKinney is now the third-highest-paid safety in the league and will join Rudy Ford and Jonathan Owens in the Packers’ safety room.
This is a fantastic signing for Green Bay as the team fills the biggest weakness on the roster and still has room to add more. The team could look into another safety like Justin Simmons, who the Denver Broncos just released. But no matter what, the Packers have helped out their safety room and are not forced to address the position in a weak safety draft class. There may be more moves to come but the Packers look like early winners of free agency so far.
