Green Bay Packers Suspend Key Offensive Player
The Green Bay Packers are making a surprising move ahead of their Week 5 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. General manager Brian Gutekunst announced the decision today stating "Unfortunately, we had to make the difficult decision to suspend Romeo for this week's game."
Gutekunst said that Doubs' decisions and actions this week "negatively impacted the team and required us to take this action." He added, "While we are certainly disappointed, we are confident that we will be able to move forward in a positive manner." Despite getting trade calls this weekend for the former fourth-round pick, Green Bay has no plans of trading Doubs.
"Romeo is a valuable member of our team and we look forward to welcoming him back next week," says Gutekunst.
Romeo Doubs Is Frustrated With Role In Offense
Romeo Doubs was fine up until Thursday when he was absent from practice originally reported as a "personal issue." After missing practice on Friday, SI's Bill Huber reported late that night that the reason Doubs was missing practice was due to his frustration with his offensive role this season.
After leading the Packers in targets last season, the former Nevada star has been the third-most targeted receiver on the team this year including eight targets in last week's loss versus Minnesota. Originally expected to be quarterback Jordan Love's main target, Doubs has fallen behind second-year receiver Jayden Reed, who is eighth in the NFL in receiving yards with 336.
Doubs Will Miss Out On Big Opportunity When Packers Need Him Most
Doubs' frustration likely comes from the fact he only has 12 catches for 169 yards and zero touchdowns. Despite this, he is on pace for more regular yards than last season although his numbers would still be below the 1,000-yard mark. This is partly due to two games with backup quarterback Malik Willis. With the offense run-heavy, Doubs only had four catches for 80 yards in two games.
Doubs matched his Week 2-3 combined catch total last week against the Vikings and with the injury of Christian Watson, was expected to have a big role this week. Now the Packers will head to Los Angeles without two of their top receivers.
With the Rams also missing two of their best receivers -- Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua -- it'll be a familiar story for both sides. After thirteen targets last week along with two touchdowns, Dontayvion Wicks will be expected to have a bigger role along with Reed.
Going Forward: Doubs Future In Green Bay Uncertain
While as previously mentioned the Packers have no plans to trade Doubs, despite reportedly getting multiple trade calls within the past 24 hours. Green Bay hopes to get this situation resolved soon with expectations that the wide receiver will suit up next week against Arizona. But if the drama is not resolved, there could be the exploration of a trade.
Hopefully, everything will work out and #87 will be making his first Lambeau Leap next week in front of the Packers faithful. But if not, we could see Doubs, who has removed all Green Bay-related content from his Instagram, in new colors this season.
