Group of 5 Teams Poised for CFP Glory: 2024’s Top Contenders

As the 2024 college football season heats up, attention is shifting to the Group of 5 programs making waves and vying for a coveted spot in the College Football Playoff. While the Power 5 teams often dominate headlines, fierce competition is brewing outside these elite conferences.

This year, a select group of Group of 5 teams is not just dreaming of a Cinderella story—they’re making a compelling case for a playoff berth. With standout offenses and formidable defenses, these squads are redefining what it means to be a contender. Here’s a look at the Group of 5 teams ready to shake up the playoff race and prove they belong among the nation’s elite.

Jaime Chadwell

Liberty Flames, CUSA

Liberty is a strong contender for a College Football Playoff spot this season. Led by quarterback Kaidon Salter, the Flames are eager to start their campaign against Campbell, offering fans a glimpse of their potential. Head Coach Jaime Chadwell exudes confidence in his squad and expects them to rise to the occasion. However, challenges like a weaker schedule compared to last season and integrating new transfers could pose hurdles. Despite this, big things are expected from the Flames.

Boise State QB

Boise State, Mountain West

Boise State is another top contender, trailing Liberty in the race for the CFP. With 18 starters returning, including standout tailback Ashton Jeanty and quarterback Malachi Nelson—who transfers from USC—the Broncos have a formidable lineup. Their offense looks promising, but improvement is needed on a run defense that struggled last season. If they can address this issue, Boise State could make a strong push for a playoff spot.

App State QB

Appalachian State, Sun Belt

Appalachian State faces a tougher schedule this year but benefits from key returning personnel on offense. Quarterback Joey Aguilar, known for his mobility, will lead a potent offense supported by top-tier skill players at running back and receiver. A crucial game against Liberty could be a make-or-break moment for the Mountaineers’ playoff hopes.

Memphis Tigers

Memphis, AAC

Returning to Memphis is Seth Henigan, college football's fourth-most productive passer from last year. With major receiving threats like Roc Taylor and Demeer Blankumsee at his disposal, the Tigers’ offense is set to shine. However, a weak pass defense could impede their chances of securing a CFP spot and a championship title.

Tulane, AAC

Despite losing their head coach and starting quarterback, Tulane remains in the hunt. New head coach Jon Sumrall from Troy and Oregon transfer quarterback Ty Thompson are expected to lead the offense. While Tulane will contend with Memphis for the AAC title, the Tigers seem better positioned for a CFP bid this season.

Other Group of 5 teams to watch include UTSA (AAC), Texas State (Sun Belt), and Fresno State (Mountain West), though they face steeper competition for a playoff spot.
