It's Time For The Cleveland Browns To Start Jameis Winston

Browns to start Jameis winston

The Cleland Browns have quite a bit invested in Deshaun Watson. It's no surprise they are choosing to stick with him as the starter. In 2022 the Browns sent three first-round picks, two fourth-round picks, and a third-round pick to the Houston Texans for the quarterback. The Browns then signed him to a 5-year, $230 million contract ($46 million AAV), fully guaranteed.

The contract runs through the 2026 season, and Watson still counts for $27 million against the cap in 2027, even if he's not playing in Cleveland anymore. Considering Watson's 2020 stats (4,823 yards and 33 touchdowns on 70% completion) it's not wonder he received such a huge deal. He only played six games in 2022 and six more last year.

After Cleveland's 34-13 loss to the Washington Commanders yesterday, he is now 1-4 on the season. Over his career for the Browns, he has completed barely 60% of his passes for 180.5 yards per game and 19 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. His refusal to follow his coach's direction against the Commanders signals that it's time for the Cleveland Browns to start Jameis Winston.

Former number one overall pick Jameis Winston signed with the Browns in free agency during the offseason, and only counts for $1.8 million against the cap. He may be the only player in NFL history to be labeled a career backup the year after leading the NFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns.

Despite throwing for 5,109 yards and 30 touchdowns in 2019, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers chose to part ways with the former Seminole. It's hard to blame them since Winston was replaced with six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, who won his seventh that first year in Tampa. What's hard to understand, is why Winston never got a fair shake after that.

Winston started only nine games for the Saints, going 6-3 with a 2:1 touchdown to interception ratio. As a former Heisman winner and top pick, he clearly has the talent to lead a team. It's time for Kevin Stefanski, Jimmy Haslem, and anyone else involved in the decision-making process to hand the reigns to Winston. If Deshaun doesn't like holding a clipboard for a better quarterback, maybe the team can massage some of that guaranteed money back to let him go.
