Ja'Lynn Polk Breaks The Patriots WR Bust Streak?
The New England Patriots drafted Ja'Lynn Polk with the 37th pick overall in the second round of the NFL draft. Ja’Lynn was expected to go late on day two; instead, the Patriots took him earlier than projected.
His college career showcased his big-play ability, with 143 receptions, 2231 yards (15.6 yards per reception), and 18 touchdowns. The Patriots are trying to rebuild their whole offense, and Polk is the guy they chose to start with at the wide receiver position.
This is what Curran had to say about Polk at camp so far.
"If and when they get there, Polk figures to be a part of it. The failures of highly-drafted Patriots receivers is legend. From Tyquan Thornton to N’Keal Harry all the way back to Chad Jackson and Bethel Johnson. Well-established. Polk, the second-rounder from Washington, seems the best bet to break the chain. Why? He’s out there ALL the time with both the starters and the second team. I don’t know if any receiver has gotten more reps through minicamp and the first two days of camp than Polk. Also, he’s not befuddled. And he’s not getting up limping every other play." NBC Sports Boston
If he and Drake Maye or Jacoby Brissett click during the off-season, it is reasonable to expect that he could be the most targeted player in this offense. People project the Patriots as a slower offense, but Alex Van Pelt and the Browns averaged 63 plays a game over the last three years with over 50% passing.
I believe AVP will bring that pace and philosophy to New England. Polk has just as good of a shot as anyone to come out as the top target in this offense. He is a great dart throw in the middle of the second of rookie drafts and a flyer late in redraft. Possibly wait to prioritize him on waivers when Maye gets the starting job.
Our consensus projections for Polk in the 2024 season would be 49 receptions, 616 yards, 4 touchdowns through the air, and 5 carries for 28 yards and 1 rushing touchdown.
