Jahmyr Gibbs Has Elite Fantasy Upside In Year Two
Jahmyr Gibbs has the potential to be the RB1 overall in multiple seasons. The Lions retained Ben Johnson as offensive coordinator, who utilizes the running backs often in the passing game. Gibbs was a part-time player for much of last season and still finished as the RB10 overall.
When Montgomery got hurt and missed time, Gibbs rattled off four top 3 finishes in a row (27.6, 29.9, 26.2, 21.5). It slowed down for three weeks, then was RB15, RB3, RB3 (17.2, 24.8, 24) in the fantasy playoffs. In the NFL playoffs, he had another 16.8, 21.4, and 12.6. As a rookie in a timeshare, he has shown he can handle an uptick in workload and be incredibly efficient.
On the ground, he averaged 5.19 yards per carry and 10 touchdowns. His double-digit touchdown potential can stick due to the offense he is on and the way they like to run the ball when they get inside the 10-yard line. Gibbs is as explosive as they come, which is why his 4.45 yards per reception is a number that can increase significantly because he is so skilled as a pass catcher.
I expect all of his numbers to increase in his second year. Montgomery isn’t going anywhere but expects the usage to be flipped where Gibbs is the leader, and Monty is spelling him. There will be games that have more David than Jahmyr, but the latter has shown that it really only takes one play to make a successful fantasy day. At only 22 years old, he should be taken in the second round of dynasty superflex leagues right up there with Breece and Bijan in the next wave of elite running backs.
Our consensus projections for Gibbs in the 2024 season are 218 carries for 1,222 yards and 8 touchdowns. In the receiving game, his consensus projection is 61 receptions for 429 yards and 3 touchdowns.
