Jason Peters’ Comments Put Eagles’ Fans In A Tough Spot
The Philadelphia Eagles are welcoming the Dallas Cowboys to Lincoln Financial Field for the Week Six Sunday Night Football matchup. There has always been bad blood in the rivalry and this year is no exception. Both teams are playing extremely well and whoever wins will be the early favorite to win the NFC East. One of the players to watch is former Eagle and current Cowboy, Jason Peters. His comments on the Eagles and their fans puts Eagles’ fans in a tough spot.
Jason Peters’ Career
Jason Peters was drafted in 2004 by the Buffalo Bills. He spent five years in Buffalo before being traded to the Eagles in 2009 due to a contract issue. Peters was an excellent player for the Bills but really took his game to the next level in Philadelphia. He was one of the best left tackles to ever play for the Eagles.
Peters spent 12 seasons in Philadelphia. He protected star Eagles’ quarterbacks such as Donovan McNabb, Michael Vick, Nick Foles, and Carson Wentz. Peters made seven Pro Bowls as an Eagle and was named to four All-Pro teams. He was a member of the Super Bowl 52 team though missed the game due to injury.
Jason Peters eventually ran into injury issues later in his career. The Eagles did not bring him back, so he signed with the Bears for the 2021 season. After one year in Chicago and injury issues in Dallas, the Cowboys signed him to be their left tackle.
Eagles’ fans were sympathetic at first. Peters spent the majority of his career in Philadelphia playing at a high level. He was one of the leaders of the team and one of the best in football. It was understandable that he wanted to continue playing even though it was for a rival team. If there was ever going to be a Dallas Cowboy that Philly fans liked, it was Jason Peters until his latest comments.
Jason Peters’ Comment On Eagles’ Fans
Jason Peters had this to say about Eagles’ fans via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.
“I just know the Philly fans are f—ing idiots when it comes to camaraderie and the Cowboys — any team, really. They start throwing stuff at teams. Like, when we played the Vikings [in early 2018], they were throwing stuff. I mean, they nasty. But they know that. They pride themselves on being nasty, you know, vulgar. They’re going to cuss at you. They’re going to throw stuff. They pride themselves on that. They know that. Philly fans are the wildest fans out there, to me.”
Jason Peters is referring to a select few fans that threw things at Vikings’ fans before the NFC Championship game in 2018. While this is inexcusable on these fans’ part, it does not represent how more than 99% of Eagles’ fans conducted themselves that day.
Eagles’ fans are passionate, know their football, and are appreciative. When Jaguars coach Doug Pederson returned to Philadelphia for a game, he was greeted with a standing ovation. Eagles’ fans will forever appreciate the Super Bowl 52 team. Even though Peters is now a Cowboy, he will forever be a part of Eagles’ history and should act that way
Jason Peters did have something good to say though. He said his time in Philadelphia “meant a lot”. He said, Philly, that’s my city Just to go back, it’ll be great to beat ‘em.”
In Conclusion
Jason Peters was a dominant left tackle for the Eagles for 12 years. He helped set a standard for success for the offensive line which is still elite today. Peters did a lot for the Eagles, but Philadelphia did a lot for him as well. His latest comments on the Eagles may not sit well with the fan base that would have likely welcomed him back like they did for Doug Pederson.
