The Jets Formula Of Winning Needs To Change

The Jets managed to defeat the Giants in OT by a score of 13-10 this past Sunday. Gang Green now improves to 4-3 on the season and has been in the win column for their third straight week.

Yes, a win is a win, but it was an ugly one. New York’s season is far from over, but their most recent game tells us that there are still some significant concerns to be had.

Zach Wilson And The Offensive Struggles

The third-year quarterback had himself a game to forget on Sunday, completing 17 of 36 passes for 240 yards, a touchdown, and two lost fumbles. Coming out of the bye week, Zach Wilson did not look like the “improved” quarterback that we saw in the three weeks leading up to the break. Injuries to the offensive line and some wet weather may have contributed to Wilson’s down performance, but it’s still no excuse to see the level of regression that we got this past weekend.

New York’s OC Nathaniel Hackett also deserves his fair share of blame for his play-calling efforts. Again, a rainy day was a factor for sure, but Hackett seemed to resort back to the same conservative game plan that we saw when the Jets were coddling Zach in the early portion of the season. The Jets cannot afford performances like these moving forward. The offense gained a total of 251 yards on 17 drives and was an abysmal 2/15 on third down. The Giants do not have an awful defense but the Jets made them look like a brick wall for the majority of this game.

Right now, whether or not Gang Green can remain competitive in games relies on how well the offense is producing. Consistency from the offense over the next few games will be the biggest indicator when taking this team seriously or not in playoff conversations. We know the defense is capable of holding its own, but the offense is the one true outlier.

The bottom line is that last week was a reminder that the Jets' offensive troubles can still hit the lowest of lows. Something needs to change because this is simply not a sustainable formula that will win football games over the course of an entire season.
