JJ McCarthy Has Fantasy Potential But Not In 2024

Out of the first-round quarterbacks, JJ might have the best group around him, with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, TJ Hockenson, and Aaron Jones. He has a good offense and is a great play-caller. Being selected 10th overall means value stability for at least the duration of his rookie deal.

His time at college was productive: 482 completions (713 attempts), 67.6% completion rate, 6226 yards (8.7 yards per attempt, league average is 7 YPA), 49 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also added 161 carries for 632 yards (3.9 yards per carry) and 10 touchdowns.

JJ has the benefit of throwing to arguably the best receiver in the league: Justin Jefferson. There are questions about whether McCarthy will start immediately or whether Sam Darnold will hold him off. Most anticipate JJ to connect with JJ early, but recent camp reports suggest it would take a massive string of performances from McCarthy to win the job.

JJ and Drake Maye have similar outlooks to begin this season in fantasy, which is unfortunate for owners who took a shot on them and need them to perform early. Whenever JJ does start, he has one of the best supporting casts and coaching staff in the league, so he should be in successful hands. In dynasty leagues, he is a good mid-round investment in start-ups. Redraft is probably best to target in waivers if he succeeds early.

Our consensus projections for McCarthy in the 2024 season would be: 371 completions, 4127 yards, 24 touchdowns, 12 interceptions through the air, and 48 carries for 200 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns.
