A Watt Family Member Makes A Important Decision About His NFL Career
One of the Watt brothers has called it a career. Following his brother JJ's retirement in 2023, former Pittsburgh Steelers and Los Angeles Chargers fullback Derek Watt has decided to retire from the National Football League. The older brother of Steelers linebacker TJ Watt and younger brother of JJ, Derek enjoyed a seven-year career in the NFL as one of the NFL's most well-known fullbacks. In a position that seems to be declining in recent years, Derek was a fan-favorite off and on the field.
Derek Watt Has Called It A Career
Derek Watt was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Wisconsin. Although he is a fullback, he played running back and also was a part of the special teams. In 2020, he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers to join his brother TJ Watt, who is a linebacker. Although JJ Watt was rumored to join his brothers, he chose the Arizona Cardinals instead.
As a Steeler, Watt mainly played special teams where he blocked a punt in his second game with the black and gold. He also caught his first and only touchdown pass in Pittsburgh in the 2022 season.
Watt Makes An Impact On And Off The Field
Watt finished his football career with 29 rushes for 71 yards, two rushing touchdowns and 18 receptions for 178 yards and one touchdown. While he did not have as much as a successful career in the NFL as his brothers, he stayed in the league longer than most fullbacks do.
Watt has also done a lot of charity work including donating $20,000 to the fund after the Waukesha Christmas Parade attack in Wisconsin back in 2021. Watt also helps out with his brother JJ's foundation which helps middle schoolers and supports them in their education and athletics.
