Justin Fields Is A Fantasy Gamble That May Never Pay Off
Going into the 2024 season, there are serious worries that Fields might not even see much playtime. This is due to the conditions of the trade between the Bears and Steelers and also the Steelers' signing of Russell Wilson. As of now, Wilson seems to have the starting job for Pittsburgh.
Even if Fields does play, we can probably expect to see similar performances to what he’s done in the years past, which is throwing up very inconsistent fantasy performances. In the first three years of his career, Fields has not shown much at all in the passing game, only having thrown for more than 250 yards in six out of his 37 games started.
While also only having 40 passing TDs over the same time. Week after week, his fantasy performances have almost all either been terrible or bailed out by his running performances, as he is one of the better running quarterbacks in the league. This rushing ability led to QB8 finishes or higher in 14 out of 30 games played, even with the mediocre passing.
If he does get the chance to start in Pittsburgh, Coach Mike Tomlin could find a way to optimize Fields' skill set, but sometimes even the best coaches can’t fix certain players. In all forms of redraft leagues, Fields should be avoided at all costs unless he can earn himself the starting job. If you have him in the dynasty, I hope that someone will give him a starting chance in the 2025 season.
Our consensus projections for Fields in the 2024 season would be: 28 completions, 329 yards, 2 touchdowns, 1 interceptions through the air, and 9 carries for 54 yards and 1 rushing touchdown.
